Wheezy productive cough

I've posted previously about my problems since December. Finally have a Consultant review in 2 weeks. However I am still wheezy coughing up disgusting green phlegm.I am using Carbocysteine to help this.

Had my inhaler changed 2 weeks again from Symbicort to Fostair

Had sooo many antibiotics and steroids in the last 4 months so don't want any more

Still don't get why I'm coughing up so much phlegm...recent sputum specimen was clear.

Feel tired as not sleeping due to cough

Any ideas?☹️

It could be as well to get a sputum test done to check whether you might need an appropriate antibiotic to get rid of a lingering infection. Have a chat if possible with your Practice’s respiratory nurse or your GP to check whether they agree this might be a good idea. I know you’ve said you don’t want anymore antibiotics, but your description sounds as though you may still have a bacterial infection lurking.

Suggested that but got told as my last one was fine didn't need to repeat!

Turns out that was a good suggestion after all, I hope it works out for you

Does your coughing ease after you have brought up the phlegm? If so sounds a bit like me, I usually clear my lungs at least twice a day. I started by using a technique the physio taught me but then moved on to a mucus remover which just makes it quicker and easier to cough up the phlegm. I always find my breathing is so much easier after I’ve cleared my lungs.

I have had similar. The coughing and green sputum lasted from beginning of November until last week and still the occasional blip. I was told they no longer consider the colour of sputum important. Green, apparently, no longer signifies an infection, just as your sputum test showed. I too was on carbocisteine to help with loosening the sticky stuff. I am now, at last, able to breathe and not coughing 24 hours nonstop. My inhaler was changed to Trimbow. Still on that and it seems to be helping. Hope you improve soon.

hi Janny, Have you heard of Air Physio? I use it twice a day for my asthma. It brings up phlegm. And seems to open the lower register so I breathe better. It seems you are having no trouble bringing it up, so you might not need this device. I guess From what you said steroids didn’t help. That’s my “go to” when all else fails. See what your Docs say about this. Sorry for your troubles. Good luck.

Had to wait to see a Dr but worth it especially after wasting my time at one UTC.Inadvertently got told my CT result ( that no one else could find)...bronchiectasis!No wonder I have felt so rubbish.

Anyway had the usual bloods CXR but my sputum was also sent and after the doctors have consulted with a Consultant Microbiologist I have been prescribed Co -Trimoxazole or Septrin.

I am relieved to know I am being taken seriously now as before I was shoved away with the same antibiotics

Just annoyed about the CT scan result, which I had asked for and been told could take upto 8 weeks to report was there all the time!!

How are you now with the new meds? I havw had a cough for years which seems to vary over time. I am wheezy mostly when I get up but cough throughout day. I am especiall bad when talkong on phone and moving to different air temperature. Resp Consultant doesn't know why I cough!

Good but my Consultant wanted me to take Azithromycin over the winter which I did. I always seem to have a cough but I check my peak flow to ensure that's not going low. I'm due another review next month.
