My old pharmacist recommended Covonia and I was able to use that without any problems, but we all have different triggers so what suits one won't necessarily suit another.

Apart from the potential allergies, suppressing a cough may mean we're not bringing up any phlegm and that can lead to problems for asthmatics. So if we do take a cough suppressant, it would be prudent to do the huffing technique in order to bring up the phlegm.

It's years since I've used cough meds. I use Listerine gargle for sore throats, vitC/zinc lozenges for early stages of sore throat and the huffing technique for phlegm. I also up my fluid intake and steam if I feel my throat is too dry or if a cough is driving me nuts. If I have a head cold I will use Beconase as inevitably the excess gunk goes down into my lungs, the faster I can clear my nose, the better.

I'm sure others will have good ideas.

Hi,As Poobah said, I'd guess it depends on triggers, but also the fact that coughing can help us clear stuff that may otherwise cause us issues. I've kept away from cough medicines for years, instead using hot honey, lemon and ginger tea, apple juice, steaming, olbas oil, paracetamol with caffeine and decongestant, as well as whatever meds I'm given... however, I've been really been really struggling at night with lurgy - sinus and then chest infection - so I started using Bronchostop but only before I go to bed, which has really helped. Hope that helps and get well soon. Lx

Thank you for the advice, I am just sipping on hot honey and lemon. Hardly slept and feel awful, done a covid test which is negative. No gunk as yet just irritating cough and tight chest. Peak flow is down so just trying to get through to the doctor, 17th in the queue 😆

yes I have used it. It helped me but everyone is different so my experience is just my experience. The best thing is to use breathing techniques to reduce coughing because coughing begets more coughing but sometimes you need something else as well. Hope it clears soon. Best wishes.

I’ve been using it during a recent virus. It tastes absolutely foul! I found that I would have a bit of a coughing fit after using it but I assumed it was the medicine clearing everything out. I didn’t really find it an asthma trigger, but obviously everyone has different triggers and allergies. I wouldn’t buy it again because it tastes so bad. Prefer covonia.

I don't know much about Bronchostop (edit: apologies I had Covonia in my head before as someone else mentioned it!) Except as with anything, to be cautious in case any of the ingredients trigger you. Herbal or natural ingredients are not automatically better, and in some cases can trigger asthma - may not for you, but it's good for anyone to be cautious.

***Just a reminder to everyone that home or over the counter remedies like steaming and Olbas oil or Vicks can be asthma triggers for some people, so please be cautious about using or recommending them***. Not being medications doesn't make them harmless!

I would also say re cough medicine that are you sure your cough isn't asthma? Is it a dry cough or are you bringing up gunk (in which case, as others have said, it may be best not to stop that). Does your reliever help with it? Cough medicine doesn't really do anything for an asthma cough.

(But it hasn't stopped people who should know better, eg senior respiratory doctors, telling me to take cough medicine for my asthma cough!!! I told him that as asthma treatments seemed to get rid of it I didn't feel the need to try cough syrup. It seemed he either didn't understand that asthma can have a cough, or refused to believe I had asthma because no wheeze).

It is definitely not a asthma cough and I am not really short of breath although my peak flow is down 15%Anyway managed to get a doctors appointment later this morning 😀

Hope your appointment is helpful! I thought I should raise the possibility re asthma cough - sometimes people can just get that by itself.

Have edited my reply a bit as for some reason I replied about Covonia not Bronchostop, sorry!

I use it as I can’t take any other cough meds and find it helps as it’s herbal rather than chemical and it doesn’t taste as bad as covonia but that’s just my opinion.I also make my own lemon, honey and ginger drink though which seems to help with the mucus side.Hope you feel better soon

Glad it helps you Nutzs47, but in general 'herbal' is not automatically better than 'chemical' (I appreciate that you specifically have not got on with others). Herbs can be very potent and dangerous and have far more side effects than synthetically created treatments (and in the case of asthma, natural substances can often trigger it). Plus herbs actually contain plenty of naturally created chemicals.

I know herbal meds can be harmful to some I can’t take St John’s Wort or anything containing Lavender but as most cough meds were developed from natural remedies I personally think that herbal remedies can be better for you but I didn’t say that for any other reason than to explain the taste as I personally think Covonia tastes like something you’d find in a shot glass 🤣

I don't think I've tried Covonia (and I won't be rushing to now lol), but I've had drinks that tasted like cough syrup 🤣so I can believe it.

A lot of prescription meds were developed from natural remedies, but I'd generally rather have the refined drug version than the original herbal remedy, even if my asthma weren't triggered by a lot of natural substances - lavender for me too and plenty of others. Some asthma medications (like Atrovent and Spiriva) ultimately come from deadly nightshade, so I prefer the medication to the plant!

With cancer, a lot of chemotherapy is developed from plants (frequently poisonous ones like yew), and can be effective, but the newer synthetic/manmade targeted treatments are often safer and have fewer side effects.

Eek, I had absolutely no idea that Spiriva comes from Deadly Nightshade! Never thought I would be basically inhaling Deadly Nightshade 😳. It works for me anyway although I am kind of glad I didn't know that before I first took it 😅. Mind you I do eat potatoes and aren't they from the Nightshade family?

Lysistrata profile image

They are! Being me I think it's kind of cool that I take a deadly nightshade derivative lol because that's how my mind works 😂 But really I was making the point that herbal or natural can often be more dangerous and bad for you than the purified, standardised pharma version - and drugs made from natural substances are not necessarily better and safer than man-made ones - though I'm very happy to take Spiriva/Atrovent and trust the process behind it.

Asthma cigarettes used to contain much less purified versions of the plant and while they probably did have some effect on asthma, they were also dangerous. (But you could also get high off them, so apparently it took some persuasion to get people onto Atrovent inhalers 😂)

Actually, you are right, it is rather cool! 🤣 I'm so glad that I don't live in the era of asthma cigarettes. it is bad enough being exposed to the dreadful 'wacky' stuff some of my neighbours smoke from time to time and the awful gone off garlic smell which makes its way into my top flat! if asthma cigarettes were still available we would all be practically floating around the building. If I knew them better I could say 'you are such light weights, I inhale deadly nightshade every day ' 🤣

I've been using Superdrug Bronchial Balsam, it's good at clearing your chest, helped me to get loads of blocked stuff up. I always check with my pharmacist first.

Just to add about hot lemon and honey. I had a brilliant physio who recommended adding cinnamon rather than ginger as it was good for the throat and chest, whereas ginger was good for the stomach. I must admit I rarely have all 3 in my cupboard when a cold strikes.
