I have been taking montelukast for two years. Now I have had nightmares for several days. Is it because of Montelukast? After such a long time? Thanks in advance for all answers.

Montelukast
I was taking it for years. Then out of the blue started having horrific nightmares. Stopped taking montelukast and nightmares stopped/significantly reduced.
I've always had a tendency to have memorable dreams but Montelukast has taken it to a vivid level, and quite disturbing at times, especially if I'm stressed about something. There's no alternative to Montelukast so it's a toss up between dreams and wheezing. Montelukast doesn't relieve asthma symptoms for everyone so if it really does help your symptoms you may want to put up with the dreams. However, if it doesn't make alot of difference to your symptoms then have a chat with your GP or asthma nurse about coming off it and trying an add on inhaler.
Hi, same here. I don't take Montelukast as dreams become so vivid. I take telfast (fexofenadine) which doesn't work in the same way but does help reduce allergies.
Thank you. I'll talk to my nurse about this.
Hi, I’d have to be convinced that this is the montelukast before coming off it. It has made such a difference to my asthma control. Maybe wait a week or two and see if the nightmares settle?
Just so you know there is another Leukotriene Receptor Antagonist (same drug type as Montelukast, but different) that you could try called Zarfirlukast. It is available on the NHS but there are some contraindications for it which mean it is less often prescribed. I take Montelukast and do have vivid dreams. But not nightmares. But I also take Telfast 180 & use Dymista. As well as quite a few other Asthma drugs.I would ask you doctor.
Cheers
