Dry, tickly cough and asthma attacks- help

I have had a dry, tickly cough for about 5 days now which has upset my asthma control slightly as I have been more short of breath and wheezy at times. I had been using my inhaler frequently and saw the GP who said it was not an infection but prescribed some steroids.

So, last night travelling home in car, i get really tight, start coughing and pull over. Became really short of breath, wheezy and coughing so after rescue inhaler called 999.

Had to wait in a queue to even get to ambulance handler. Crew took around 15 minutes and by then was exhausted, sats around 87%. Given usual cocktail of salbutamol and ipratropium and felt better, and wanted to go home but then felt dizzy and passed out, so in I go!

Anyway long story short, no infection, more nebs, bloods, steroids and discharged. Try to get to sleep at around 0600, difficult but try to nap. Wake after not even 2 mins coughing hard, face feels like its swollen, throat feels like closing and phlegm ++. This carries on for a few minutes and it makes me feel worried if I needed help I couldn't speak

Anyone had similar, know how to break the coughing/wheezy cycle? I can't face another like this!!

Sorry I can’t really help except have you tried Pholcodeine cough medicine for your dry cough? It was recommended to me by a GP years ago and it definitely helps soothe the throat/cough. You can buy it over the counter.

Hope things improve for you.

Sounds like you need to go to a dr or a&e again soon!! If your throat feels like its closing and you feel like you can't speak,I'd say that's an emergency!!!

I am exactly the same with the same ‘viral cough’ my throat feels full of phlegm and it’s triggered my asthma. Went the GP this morning to be told go home have fluids then had an asthma attack and had to call ambulance 5 hours later... so now I’m lying in hospital. I honestly didn’t want to read and run but I feel like I am experiencing the exact same thing. I also can’t get any sleep with everytime I lie down I’m coughing my guts up and wheezing x

So sorry your suffering

Sorry to hear you are experiencing this also. I hope you feel better soon.

The steroids seem to have dampened down the tickle and without prolonged coughing attacks I can manage my asthma better.

Hope you improve quickly and get out soon!
