My GP has me on Seretide 3 puffs x 2 am and pm. Is anyone else in a similar situation? I know the recommendations are 2 puffs x 2 a day but it’s just jut enough for me. Would be really interested to hear what others do to stay of oral steroids in times of flare up. Xx

Hi, I take seratide 4 puffs twice a day plus spiriva inhaler. I also take montalukast tablets and slophyllin tablets and 2 prednisolone steroids every day. Every time I have even a slight flair up my steroids are then increased up to 8 tablets a day generally and then when I start reducing i come down one a week which is a slow process as sometimes you boomerang up and down for weeks or months. My doctors know how severe my asthma is though so they generally are.led by what I ask for they give me.

I'm currently on a mission to stay out of hospital this winter so I'm starting on more antibiotics today. I have a neb at home already and hopefully will be allowed oxygen too soon.

As soon as you feel your asthma getting worse ask for steroids and if you don't already ask if you can keep a rescue pack of steroids and possibly antibiotics although not all docs like you to have the antibiotics until they have determined you need them.

The oral.Steroids are.essential for.me when I'm unwell and to be honest,.I've be on them more than I've been off them this year, and I've had had several admissions including a 5 week.stay which I wouldn't recommend lol

I take calcium tablets because of all.The steroids i take and steroids can make you feel.rubbish but it's better than not breathing properly at all as that is exhausting.

Good.luck and hope the winter isn't too bad for you Hugs xx

Thanks so much for replying. My battle is keeping of the oral steroids they give me terrible side effects. 8 tablets a day? How many mgs a day do you take? And how do you function? My side effects are after I come off the steroids. Truly horrendous. Is there any other option for you? It sounds as though your taking a lot? Xx

I am new to this late onset asthma thing but I’m getting the impression that steroids are the go to thing when inhalers aren’t working. Is there research going into asthma research and designing new drugs that actually work for people... or we all on the merry go round as trial and error for each new drug?

There needs to be another option than all these steroids...

I have been asthmatic for 44 years and I have had many different treatments over those years. I take currently Duo Resp Spiromax inhaler which delivers 320 mcg of budesonide and 9 mcg of formoterol fumarate dihydrate. It is a dry powder inhaler. I also have a salbutamol inhaler which I use once or twice a week as the Duo Resp inhaler works most of the time. About five weeks ago I caught the common cold that's going around, with sore throat, a very runny nose and a headache. A week later it had turned into a chest and sinus infection so I rang the doctors for a same-day appointments and saw a doctor seventy minutes later. I was put on my usual dose of 40mg of Prednisone and 3x500mg of Amoxicillin daily for 7 days. I told the doctor that the Duo Resp dry powder inhaler was the best I've had and that 3 weeks previously I had walked 5 miles, including 2 miles up a gentle incline in northern France.

I have previously been on long term prednisolone to relieve the symptoms of Polymyalgia, a reducing dose from 40mg down to zero daily which took 3 years and 7 months. I have no side effects from it.

Thankyou for replying! Your very fortunate that you have no side effects from the prednisone. I wish I could take it without it giving me so many side effects. The longest I have been on it is 6 days, 50mg, no tapering. It’s after that I have the side effects. Maybe I should be tapering down? ??
