I had an appointment with a respiratory consultant today. Peak flow and oxygen ok according to them. I got told that I have difficult asthma. And I am going back to my go before my fitnote is up. He can decide wether I have to go back to work. Given another inhaler to try and told I might have to go on long term low dose of steroids. And I have to go back for a follow up in May. I’ve also had bloods taken for allergy tests.

I am glad you got your appointment and a diagnosis. I being reading your posts you have been through the ringer. Today must of been hard but now you know what you are facing. There are many people on here with difficult asthma who will I sure give you good advice and support.

I in the process of seeing a consultant for my asthma. After my asthma got too bad for GP care last November.( Flare up then asthma attack and then two attack in two days while still on prednisolone) So far I have seen him once and had blood test for allergies. (Very allergic to House dust mite). Back to see him after breathing tests next week and results in March.

Best advice I can give would be to call asthma nurses on their helpline 0300 222 5800 between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday. Then are very helpful, caring and totally professional.

I think its been more difficult, because this is the first time I have been off for so long & last week I was just at breaking point, so hopefully, I can get back to some sort of normality soon. X

I hope and pray you can have normality. I pray that now with this new inhaler your asthma becomes well controlled and you can go back to work.

Sorry to hear this. I have difficult asthma too, currently in hospital but hopefully home today. I’m also very allergic foods and environment. It’s frustrating but you will get there. It’s time unfortunately and can’t be rushed

Still don’t quite understand what he meant by difficult asthma.

Just a medical classification, allows other to understand where your disease is on the spectrum. Some asthmatics just need one inhaler and very occasional reliever. Others need a couple but still don’t use much reliever and on building up to difficult

We often need multiple therapies, I have 3 inhalers, and many tablets including daily low dose steroids to get an even keel.

When I flare it’s hard to get back under control and often needs hospital admission and support.

It’s not nice being a “difficult “ anything but it’s the lungs not you,

Well hopefully get sorted now. Still got to see gp. He can tell me if I’m fit for going back to work.

I wouldn't wish Asthma on anyone, but It's a relief to hear I am not the only one with difficult asthma.

My asthma is fine most of time to the point when you feel you don't need the drugs. But when it flares up, it flares up with a vengeance. I entering my 5th week of not being able to hold a conversation without getting out of breath.

I am seeing my GP. Our approach is to rule out all other medical conditions that can cause breathlessness then we can concentrate on getting me on the right asthma medication.

The only thing I find hard not to do is panic, prior to november, I was never really up or down with my asthma.

Its hard not to panic.

I was told by an A&E nurse that your body goes into a state of fight or flight mode during an asthma attach, which increases your heart rate, which then causes you to breath faster which doesn't help.

So in theory you could be as calm as a cucumber, its your body that has gone into panic mode
