Hello, I believe that hormones can play a part with the asthma flare ups. I was on HRT and after researching I found out that it can affect your asthma. I stopped it and have been better, however when the hot flushes returned, I noticed that I had to use my ventolin more. I'm also on seretide and have found it quite good. I have late onset asthma and I'm still trying with trial and error to get this under control! i now have monkelast and I'm hoping it will help with the allergy part - it's all a bit new to me, but I've found great advice on here and it really helped me feel more confident when I saw the asthma nurse today, I felt that I knew a little more about what I needed to ask and also not to feel like I was bothering them or being a fraud πŸ˜‰

Hi I have had 3 children and my asthma worsened during all my pregnancies. doctor advised me that it was due to hormones and I had to keep changing my preventative inhaler. Good new is it went back to normal once babies where born. hope this helps

I seem to recall something on the UK asthma website stating that hormonal changes can have an impact on asthma. Currently going through the menopause myself, I don't think it has had much impact on my asthma as yet, but I've certainly noticed an increase in sensitivity as far as my (non seasonal) rhinitis is concerned.

Hi Lyngal

Maggie is right there is an article on Female hormones on the Asthma Uk website, also on women and asthma.

If you google Asthma and hormones I saw a couple of Daily mail articles confirming what you said.

Thanks will do really struggling at the minute go to see the asthma nurse on Thursday so will ask if I can increase my preventive inhaler at certain times thanks again

You're welcome. Im on seretide 250 and I take 2 puffs twice a day. As per my action plan I am entitled to 3x a day if my peak flow is between 60% to 80% of my regular score or if the symptoms are as follows: slight cough, a little breathless, occasional waking up at night.

Good luck on Thursday :)))

Lyngal. I really think you should something about this tomorrow. Thursday is much too long to wait. Go to local walk-in clinic if you can tomorrow or your GP 1st thing on Monday, saying you are in the middle of an asthma attack. If it drops much more go to A & E. I have rescue Prednisolone tablets to take at home for when this happens and you should see if your GP will prescribe them for you, so you can act quickly for when your asthma flares up, as it seems to have done at present. I hope you have up-to-date ventolin to hand. Do not be afraid to dial 999 either. Asthma UK website have excellent advice on what to do when having an attack. Good Luck

Ah that's a big drop. Start on the extra puffs and extra ventolin if needed. I like phoning 111 because they can make an emergency GP appointment at the A&E and it saves the wait. Try that tomorrow if you feel poorly. Take care:))

As others have mentioned, 400 down to 280 is a big drop! To give you an idea, my own GPs start to get twitchy if my peak flow drops to around 80% of what is known to be normal for me. 280 is 70% of what is normal for you. In my experience, and I'm sure others on this site will have found the same thing, if you go down with a viral infection (and we're in the right time of the year for that) when your asthma is not well controlled things can get very difficult, very quickly. Last time it happened to me I ended up in hospital for five days. You do need to get advice on this ASAP.

Absolutely agree with MaggieHP. I understand that the asthma exacerbation starts as soon as the virus hits your system, even before you have symptoms of the cold. It is much easier to get it under control, if you treat it aggressively early on - getting ahead of the curve- and you need less steroids. Once the exacerbation is in full flow, it is much harder to get under control. I have a cold at the moment, but used my add-on inhaler straight away, which I asked my GP to prescribe for when I have a cold and, touch-wood, there has been no real exacerbation, so no pred. tablets needed. I only have moderate asthma, but have got my advice from my sister who has brittle asthma.

Agree with this completely. If I feel a cold coming on I start to keep a close watch on my peak flow readings so that I can increase meds (ventolin initially) in order to bring it back under control. Like you sirocco, I'm a moderate asthmatic, but I've had the condition for over fifty years now so I know my own particular version very well indeed:-)
