Daughter 5 coughing non stop but not wheezy.

Hi my daughter 5 is a moderate asthmatic diagnosed at 16 Mths with quite a few admissions for pneumonia, attacks, and so on. 2 weeks ago she saw her paediatriction he was concerned at how wheezy she was so upped her medication (125 seretide, 5mg singulair, 120mg slo-phyllin) and put her on 6 pred tablets a day for 5 days with 4 hourly ventolin. This helped but this week she has become increaseingly breathless but not wheezy. She had a terrible night last night and had 2 hours sleep. She could not stop coughing and that lead to retching. I took her to the gp first thing and he thought she might have a chest infection coming on so prescribed antibiotics. I'm not sure about this as she has no temp or other signs of infection. Any way he said bring her back this afternoon if she gets worse or take her in to A&E if she's wheezy. She's no better this afternoon and is very tired so I will let her rest and doze rather than drag her up the docs again. But I was thinking that if tonight is as bad as last night I would take her in to A&E with or without a wheeze. I started her on steroids on Wednesday when it started getting bad and have been giving her 4hourly ventolin as well so I feel like I have exhausted all avenues at home. Also her sats are between 96-98% so not too low but definiatly reduced and her peak flow is 100 compared to a well 150. What would you do?? Do you have any tips to stop the cough?? Any help would be much appriciated.

Hi

My daughter is a coughing asthmatic & rarely wheezes, I would go back to the GP this afternoon if you are unsure especially as it is the weekend. Sometimes I give my daughter cough medicine but it depends on the type of cough. It has taken me 4 years to learn the difference between her asthma cough & her dry, tickly cough. Sometimes she coughs so much inside that I take her outside & that breaks the cycle. Good luck

i am an adult but i had an asthma attack pf readings 300 but sats 98% if unsure take her straight to A&E and yes i don't wheeze but this time i did start for the first time ever and if it was the olympics i would have got gold for coughing!! lol joking aside hope she's better soon and this hot weather does not help for us. if you can get her to do peak flow reading as that would be useful for the doctors if she needs to go.

good luck

If she is no better today with all the meds the doc has given her, I would take her to A&E

poor wee girl must be exhausted after so little sleep
