Sun Cream Allergy

I realise this is not strictly asthma related but here goes... My two girls (2 & 4) are both allergic to a host of things which causes various reactions in both including asthma in the oldest.

Neither of them seem to be able to tolerate sun-cream without their skin blistering and becoming really itchy, I have tried so many over the last couple of summers without success and wondered if anyone had any suggestions now the weather is getting hot again. The oldest got told off at school today because she looks like she is burnt (she isn't - we tried yet another sun-cream on her yesterday with the same itchy reaction). obviously with the youngest we put thin layers of long clothing on her and nursery keeps all the kids out of the shade but now the oldest is at school and has to wear uniform we can't really do that for her.

Any suggestions gratefully received!!

I use Soltan, which I think is marked hypo-allergenic and am ok with it. I think Simple also do suntan lotion, I've not had problems with any Simple products so would trust that as well.

Do look out for the ones with hypo-allergenic marked on them. Remember, all our skin can be a little different. For example: I can't use sunscreen products from No 7 but they're all marked as hypo allergenic. A patch test is always worthwhile (put a bit on somewhere that won't cause too many problems if a reaction happens - as a test).

Thanks! Simple I think is one brand I haven't tried, the girls are ok with the simple baby range so I will have to go track it down! x

My partner has this problem. She finds the Piz Buin sensitive one the best.

My son also has a sun cream allergy and makes his excema flare up within minutes, causing his sking to become inflamed, crack and bleed. If he puts suncream on his face, it has been known for his eyes to swell up and become almost closed! Yuk!!

He now gets suncream via our GP. Its a special hypo allergenic one especially for allergies. Pop along to the Gp and ask them. Its also on prescription so you wont have to pay those awful supermarket prices that are put on suncream these days!!

I know of a few of the children at my school who are allergic to suncream and for a couple it is specifically the lanolin in some brands. Don't know if maybe all of the ones you tried have lanolin in. I think (please check first) that the Banana Boat factor 50 spray mist is lanolin free and whilst not allergic to lanolin I do get itchy to many suncream and this one is great! THey also do a factor 30 i think. It is definitely hypoallergenic and alcohol free and goes up to SPF 110!!!!

Hey thanks everyone for those replies. The oldest Peachick has an appointment with the GP but they wont see her for a couple of weeks so in the meantime I've bought some banana boat spray as it was half price in the supermarket... She's had it on for a couple of hours today and it seems ok hopefully it will continue to be until we see the GP!

I have severe eczema so have to be very careful too with my skin, I use the following as recommended by my dermatology nurse. Have used it successfully for 3 years with no problems. It is not expensive and they do a kids version

Thanks for that link Katina, I have just ordered some for my daughter who has had problems with every sun cream we have used for the past 12 years!! If it is no good for her I will use it as I too have sensitive skin which is now very thin from steroids. Will let you know how we get on.

Katina, my order of suncream came the next day. It is fine for me, but yet again my daughter came out in a rash. Back to the drawing board! Thanks anyway.

Just a quick update - we used the banana boat kids one and it seems ok so far but I had just by coincidence discovered the sun mousse the other day so its next on the list if the banana boat one becomes a problem too!.

Someone mentioned the other day that perhaps it was the water resistant part of the sun cream that was causing the problem? Am still waiting on gp appointment for Peachick! Will be typical that we get it sorted after the sun has gone!! LOL!
