hypertonic saline nebulisation

Hi, am having a trial for this treatment next week, I was woundering if anyone has this, and how u found it etc?

Hey

I've been on the 7% solution for around 5yrs. It has to be introduced very slowly and carefully (especially with asthmatics) as it can cause bronchospasm. The physios will probably want to watch you closely and monitor lung function pre and post neb but I would defo recommend doing salbutamol pre hypertonic.

I too am about to start this. However, as Tks says, it can cause bronchospasm so I'm going over to Heartlands to do a trial with the physios. They will gradually increase the percentage, measuring spirometry pre- and post- to ensure it's not going to be problematic. I've had saline nebs before and they haven't really made much difference, but they're hoping that hypertonic saline might. I have bronchiectasis too.

I am also having my trial done at hearlands but through the asthma unit there mainly with the asthm anurse and con.

I am going 2 b prescribed salbutamols nebs to have b4 like u have said, but no one has mentioned the physio's, i am alos under the impression that i will the correct strengh in one go.

I was wppindering that they say it is a salty solution does this mean it tastes very strongly and is it just like having a normal neb?

You can't really taste the salt in it, I usually have it via neb facemask though so I probably wouldn't notice. You have to make sure you thoroughly wash neb pieces afterwards because it crystallises on neb parts and surfaces very quickly, it also does seem more 'steamy' than normal nebulisers, they usually have the cap the smoke detector in my room off in hospital because it sets the alarms off. Depending on what % you have, I have 7%, normal saline is 0.9% so there is a bit of a difference.

Hi,

I've been on hypertonic saline nebs for a year now. I was started on them by the north west lung centre for bronchiectasis & asthma. In my case it's a lot of bronchiectasis & a little bit of asthma so my experiences are probably not typical.

I had a trial with one of the physios who did lung function tests before & after the test dose. I was ok with it. Make sure you take your blue inhaler with you for that. On a day to day basis I use a neb with a ventstream because I got quite sore eyes from the salt. It does make me cough a fair bit but that helps bring all the muck up. I do the neb followed by about 20mins of chest physio and probably cough a good few egg cups of ick up (sorry if too much info!)

Two years ago I had 9 HDU admissions in 1 year and life was pretty miserable, I've now had one in the last year. This isn't entirely due to the hypertonic saline, I've also been started on long term antibiotics & I think the chest physio helps as much if not more than the saline (the saline just makes the physio easier) and I've had some other things tweaked.
