Hugs Hopalongkp,I don’t have any answers but truly sympathise with lack of control when taking antihistamines plus the other usual meds.None of the antihistamines seem to work for me anymore whether for atopic asthma or eczema. Having just left hospital with the usual upping in dose pred for both severe atopic asthma and wacky out of control urticaria (spread to my mouth and throat) plus severe contact eczema felt like the medics can’t do much anymore. Plus the added bonus of looking like an elephant woman and breathing to match is truly dispiriting. What is so frustrating - but I’m trying to think positive here - is that when my eczema is well controlled I’m ‘congratulated’ upon a soft skin and when my peakflow hovers around 200 a new personal best! Those goal posts move fast! ‘Leaving no stone unturned’ is a phrase that sticks in my mind originally used by EmH (?) to describe a journey that many of us who post on this forum have tried in order to make sense of, and bring under control, asthma symptoms whatever the level of severity. So I’m hoping that someone else might have a suggestion as well!Mia XXXPS Have not been let down with maxitrol eyedrops, but only to be used short term.

Allergies!!!!

I do know that Montelukast 10mgs is supposed to be beneficial if taken alongside normal antihistamines. My son is now on Xolair-Omalizumab and appears to be doing the trick, although he is allergic to most things.

Good luck

Hiya, have just started Montelukast and it has proven to be of some benefit but it did take some time before I have felt able to start reducing some of my antihistamies and it has definatley helped with sleeping and not needing ventolin through the night despite also being on Oxis. Was taking fexofenadine and the full 8 tablets of prition every day.

Just saw my allergist and she suggested taking the fexofenadine twice a day, one in morning and one at night so that I could reduce the amount of piriton. I too have had to stop my nasal spray cos my nose was completely blistered ang bleeding all the time. But I haven't heard of any other antihistamines than the ones you have mentioned, sorry!! Hope you find a solution I know how horrid it is to feel plagued by allergies!!

sorry, this is a dumb question, but is montelukast actually an antihistamine? have been taling it for 18 months now, and along with all my other meds, it seems to be quite good for the lungs most of the time, though i couldn't single out what med works good or not, for what symptom? this a bad thing not to be able to tell? also, i still often get blocked and runny sinuses and nose, sometimes eyes itch, nose very itchy ofnten, so it seems not to work so well as an antihistamine on my purely allergic symptoms (not the lungs)

so yeah, sorry for the dumb question, but can anyone explain how this drug helps the lungs?

Hello Hannah,

Montelukast ( Singulair) isn't specifically an antihistamine, it is an anti-leukotriene drug which blocks the leukotriens which are involved in allergic reactions and inflamation in asthma ...... very basic description..... perhaps someone can elaborate... my brain is a bit fuzzy today.

Montelukast and antihistamines can go hand-in-hand, as Monte works on a slightly different part of the allergic pathway from antihistamines.

Hopalong have you tried Mizolastine? Just another name that I can think of that you've not listed there.

Cath - cant have it as have cardiac problems (?dilated cardiomyopathy/VT and persistent trigeminy? )still waiting full diagnosis. Have been on Montelukast for quite a few yrs now as well. will just go into hiding!!!
