my hay fever is playing up. I've been trying both cetirizine and piriton and neither seem to be helping at all. is there anything else which can be bought over the counter, or will I need to see my gp/cons to get something stronger prescribed?

antihistamines.
I like Benadryl because it works quite fast so I only use it when I need it. Many other types need you to take them every day even if you don't need them. However, have you tried asking your pharmacist. They can very often suggest something that does the trick although, obviously, if you need something a lot stronger you might need to see your GP.
Loratadine is another OTC antihistamine but I didn't find it as effective as cetirizine. Since I still had lots of symptoms on cetirizine last year, this year my GP has prescribed fexofenadine, which has so far been great. You will probably have to go and ask your GP to prescribe something.
there are a number of over the counter and prescription antihistamines. Would be worth speaking to your GP (even if via phone consultation) to discuss it further with him/her.
I suffer with hayfever but my GP prescribed Fexofenadine which I find works really well for me, I don't know if you can buy it as over the counter medication.
I take fexofenadine 180mg (morning) and mizollen 10mg (night) which seems to help with the allergy side of things, both are on prescription. You can also get your GP to prescribe nasal drops and eye drops if you need them...
