just wondering how long have you been on 45mg of pred?? seems like alot to be taking or is it just a one off dose?

although pred is a horrible drug to take and the side effects not nice it is the lesser of two evils really either bad chest and no pred or pred and a better chest.

from my knowledge there isnt really an alternative to pred but some one may know of one.

i know it is a pain but it is really difficult to read you messages with the text speak. can you type the words out properly please when posting. thanks.

With all that amount of medication whatever are your peak flows. even i dont take half of all that and i am supposed to be on maximum medication. Maybe i am missing out here.

Hi Mandy,

I presume you are under a respiratory consultant? Have you had a tertiary referral? With that combination of medication, you should probably be being managed by someone with an interest in difficult asthma.

You are on a fairly high dose of pred - you could ask your consultant about steroid sparing agents. These are immunosuppressive drugs, but are given at a fairly low dose so that they have predominantly anti-inflammatory effects. Examples would be methotrexate, ciclosporin and azathioprine. The idea is that they allow you to reduce the amount of prednisolone you're on. They are potentially dangerous drugs with some unpleasant side effects so they do require a lot of monitoring while you're on them.

Other options to consider would be Xolair, if it's suitable for you, and possibly subcut terbutaline. Again, though, these would be things that would be best started by someone with a specialist interest in difficult asthma.

Ken - the combination of medication that Mandy is on seems fairly typical for someone with difficult asthma. It's pretty similar to what I am on.

Hope this helps
