Best Sleeping Positions???????

I have been advised by my respiratory nurse to lie on my right hand side when sleeping. Does anyone have any better suggesions, or reasons why sleeping on the right would be bennefical???

Hi ria,

interesting topic. I think it's hard to say but learned at uni (I'm a trained physio) that it depends on where the phlegm is situated. If phlegm is on yr right side of the lungs and you lay in your left, gravity makes it move to the center and you'll start coughing it up. This is to drain your lungs and have productive cough.

If you want a good nights sleep then this is probably not advisable to do just before bedtime.

I usually sleep in a sitting position but sometimes just try the left or right side and see if I can settle.

Maybe someone else here has got a better idea?

Sorry I can't be of more help.

HI,

I heard somewhere on here your left side is preferred side to sleep on,giving the right lung that's bigger

more room.

Someone else might come on and say other wise so not sure.

Hi,

What a great post, I had a discussion about this just this morning with my wife.

I have for some time now favoured my right side to sleep on, after finding it sometimes troublesome when sleeping on my left side. Just last night I tried to switch to my left for a change only to feel quite uncomfortable with a sort of draining sensation going from my right to left side, then when attempting lying on my back was left with a very heavy sinking sensation in my chest which resulted in having to sit up for a while and have a ""good cough"" after which I returned to my favoured right side and eventually got back to sleep.

I know this hasn't answered your question as such but at least we now know we are not alone with this problem.

Gavin Kelso.

id also heard that lying on one side was better because of the stronger lung thing that glynis mentioned, and ive also noticed that i massivly favour that side when im ill. im not sure but i think that lying on the opposite side stops you feeling sick, but that could easily be me misremembering stuff.

Like Gavin, I find lying on my left side makes me feel whatever usually sits internally on the right hand side of me, is slowly sliding to the left. Uncomfortable feeling and so I go back to my favoured right side.

Hee hee...........I thrash around all night! Couldn't tell you which side I sleep on cos I don't stop moving!

I have a slightly raised head of bed... I dont know what side I end up on but at the mo finding it easier to fall asleep on my right side.. but I am a wriggler sleeper!

im just jealous sleep propped up with loads off pillows im almost upright

I'm a stomach sleeper, so when I get these chronic asthma attacks due to allergens and cold wind, I don't sleep. I'm working with Dr's to get better control. I recently moved back "home," which is 3 hours north and has more water, foliage, wildlife, and mold. Neither side is working! Help!!!

I've made an observation that most asthmatics tend to favor our right side when we sleep. And I'm sure most of us have been told that we need to sleep sitting up, especially when we're ill, with active asthma and a cold due to the weather change (aka hurricane Harvey rolling through and causing asthmatics everywhere to make a visit to the ER like I did on 8/27/17). I have had a hard time falling sleep because I can't stop coughing. The ER sent me home with azithromiacin, 4 days worth of strong steroids, and an abuterol Inhaler. I found that sleeping in an upright position and on the my right side has been easier to fall asleep. It give my left lung a chance to drain. I'm a super light sleeper, so any coughing wakes me up. Hope this helps and hope you start feeling better soon.
