and just when it was all going so well..............

Well looks like all the excitement about Sean being so well on new drugs has come crashing round our ears. He was suffering with hayfever sun night/monday and on tuesdy ended up being admitted to hospital. His p/f was down to 25% and inhalers/nebs not making any differnce so on iv salbutamol in hdu. Things got worse over night so cstarted on iv aminophylline as well. Weds the local hosp decided to call the retrieval team and get him to picu at Rbh. I am amazed the Rbh had a bed but thank god they did. They put him on max doses of iv salbutamol,aminophylline,magnesium and cortisone to stabilise him.

So now he on hdu and still on iv salbutamol,aminophylline, nebs and oxygen improving very slowly but i think he going to be in hospital for a while yet. He was very very close to being ventilated and is becoming increasingly brittle and worrying the hell out of me. Am trying my hardest to be rational about it all as he is improving but I also know he can rebound very quick and this wont be the last time. I can't believ i let myself get so caught up in thinking the new drugs had worked , guess i'm just ooking for answers i'm not going to get.Anyway sorry for the rambling and hope things are going well for you all.

hi sorry to hear about sean. I have three children with asthma and have asthma myself. i know it can be exciting when a new drug appears to work. I have found though that the hayfever is already quite bad this year. Personally i blame all the ever increasing number of rape plant fields that seem to be appearing in our area. Have you got them in your county? I do hope sean is soon on the mend in my experience my youngest who is the most chronic of my three can go down hill in a couple of seconds but usually bounces back after a few days rest.

i know exactly how you feel, michael has been really ""well"" the past few weeks with only mild daily symptoms so i was thinking that the azithromycin was doing the trick but since his hayfever started showing its nasty head, hes been much worse. he hasnt been admitted yet but at the mo im counting the days - he hasnt recovered from the reaction he had last week and hes still on 4 hourly nebs. they wont let him continue like this at home for much longer. i cant wait til he starts doing peak flows, hes still a little young at the mo but io hope they will be a good pre empting measure. the sats monitor only really gives me guidance when hes really unwell!

i hope sean is feeling better and remember to take care of yourself, its easy to forget!

Hi, thanks for messages and Bex if I get a min I will pop in and say hi .

The I.v salbutamol has been stopped this morning but still on iv aminophyline. The cons are considering the possibility that sean has built up a steriod resistance as he needing massive doses to sort him out. This admission he been on 40mg dexmethsone per day and methylprednisolone i.v which is equivalent to 250mg per day of pred! It been decided that a steriod sparing agent is the way to go as the doses steriod so high so he starting cyclosporin on monday. Will keep u all posted , hopefully home next week
