Location of pain

Hi everyone,

I have been diagnosed with hip arthritis. Originally the pain was in the groin area and also thigh. It now seems to have progressed to the pain going further down to the knee and even below to the calf and shin. The knee and outer thigh gives the most pain. Would like to know where you feel your pain. and any tips for coping.

Thank you all

I solved the problem by having a new hip!

I’m good now thanks - second shoulder is a bit niggly but I intend to do as much as I can to keep it under control…Don’t really want to add anymore titanium to body 🤣😂

But extremely grateful for what has been done.

Glad that you are ok and I hope that your other shoulder will be fine Can I ask how did you find the recovery from your knee replacement ?

I have found it quite an ordeal as I had terrible sciatic pain after I'm 8 weeks past my op now and only just starting to feel a bit more like my old self My hip replacements were so much easier

All the very best xx

I think the recovery from a knee replacement takes longer than hip, because it’s a more complicated joint.

It was the first one I had so didn’t really know what to expect I suppose, but after the first week or so when I swopped from crutches to walking stick getting about was much easier.

The actual healing of the scar etc was good, but then I’m lucky in that I do heal very easily, and I did feel good in myself.

Did find that if I walked too much or over exerted leg the area around the knee seemed to be affected for up to about a year…..not painful as such but just an ache. Didn’t have same thing with hip - which was done only 6 months after knee.

Just so pleased to be pain free to be honest.

Do hope you soon feel better.🌸

Physiotherapy, especially doing the exercises you will be given to strengthen supporting muscles. Almost any arthritic joint will benefit if supporting muscles are kept strong.

I take glucosamine sulfate, two doses a day of 1000 mg. I have also started using Flexiseq on my knees, which hurt not so much because of OA but because I had a couple of injuries. I have also been doing strengthening exercises for them, and while last year I was semi-crippled now I'm nearly back to normal. Be aware that NSAIDS interfere with cartilage renewal and you should try to avoid them as regular treatment for OA pain.

I had exactly the same pain I went on to have both my hips replaced and it's the best thing ever Good luck

For me, your post is very interesting! I have the same symptoms, except the groin pain is dreadful. I take tramadol & paracetamol for other issues & they don’t touch the pain sometimes. Last night I was a bit desperate as down to 3 hours a night this week, & took time release morphine…but it hasn’t helped! I thought I had sciatica, but it’s been bad for 2 months now, so now I’m wondering if arthritis has spread to my hip (currently in thumbs, wrists & toes!) I’m doing exercises, heat pads, electric blanket on all night on low, pillow between knees to sleep, & soaking in large slipper bath, & all those things help somewhat. I walked for 2 hours yesterday, but then fell down on the patio on the bad side last night, & now considering hip arthritis!! No idea if my tips are any good, as tips are for sciatica (I think!!)

“I walked for 2 hours yesterday, but then fell down on the patio on the bad side last night, & now considering hip arthritis!”

Failing down on patio, lucky not a broken hip…ouch! Wouldn’t have done your PMR much good either, so keep an eye on that!

Oh dear, forgot you are ‘here’, as well as ‘there’ (PMR)! Although we walked for a long time, I doubt we did more than two miles as on a new walk in the forest & lots of birds to see, & photos to take! My PMR is unhappy anyway, reduced from 5mg to 4.5mg a week ago, & cannot believe the 0.5 can make so much difference. Resting today, Olympics & rugby! Thanks, S x

You should know we Viking Goddesses are all seeing! (in joke to those on PMRGCAuk forum). Ditto on the rugby for sure, quite likely on the Olympics too!

Yes - 0.5mg Pred can make a huge difference!

LOL, I can feel you looking over my shoulder when I'm overdoing it, and I can hear PMR Pro all the way from Italy, expressing disgust about my way of life!! I have been able to taper quite easily through from 14 to 5mg, bit of a hitch around the 7mg area. But this 5mg and below is a whole new ball game! I stuck it out at 3mg for 3 weeks last August, and it was appalling. Life wasn't great at all. But now back at 5 and being truly careful and following your taper!!!! Thanks, S x

You could try fish oil (not cod liver oil), circumin, and Glucosamine Gold - the last one from Nature's Best. These made my arthritis pain bearable for many years . . .

Thanks! I buy from Nature’s Best, so that’s easy. I’m having more problems with my hands & feet now, think I just thought it’s because it’s winter & tried to ignore it!

I have psoriatic arthritis that attacks my tendons and one of those tendons is the IT band that runs from my hip to shin and does that hurt.

Hi cmjoyce, I am new here 🙋‍♀️I saw an orthaepaedic surgeon for my hip arthritis, which he says is fairly significant

But, as I was not having any groin pain, he felt all my pain and weakness was due to muscular weakness

Don't want to cause you worry, as we are all soooo different, but if you are having groin pain, I would think about a medical opinion for this

Best wishes 💕

I think, like all our body, the cells are constantly being replaced. Even the skeleton you have is different from the one you had ten years ago!

Yes that’s where you feel the pain as the actual joint is in the groin area not the outside of the hip as you might imagine. I went to a physio with pain in my groin and he moved my leg a little and said can’t touch you go to your GP and get referred to see a surgeon you probably need a new hip!
