Hi everyone,I’m persisting on riding my bicycle and the new knee though a clonky is working quite well.I now have a new query for you,I am experiencing pain and tenderness on the top of my knee in the region of the patella, wondering if anyone else has this?It has begun to hurt in bed too, perhaps I’m doing too much exercise ,I’m just over 3 months post op now. Thanks, Judy.

In the region of the scar tissue? Do you mean the Kneecap itself which is just bony, or above it where the muscles/tendons are still recovering? Might need to give it a bit of a rest for a few days and see if that helps.

I fell over about 7 weeks ago and went down smack on my replacement knee, and although no damage done to that, I did pull all tendons around it, must have twisted as I went down, and it gave me gyp for about 4 weeks. Found a hot water bottle helped, once I’d got the inflammation down with cold therapy.

Funny you should say that,I did fall in the garden, a branch I was holding on to broke off ( you couldn't make it up!) anyway I did fall on my knee but at the time I was amazed that it didn't seem to hurt or be damaged at all ,maybe there's a bruise inside? I'll rest it for a while and use my ice pack again. Thanks for your reply.

Yes could be.....so as you say, rest, cold first, then warmth.

Sorry to hear that. My physio said it was too early for me but I think that was more in terms of safety on the road, being able to stop abs dismount quickly etc. I tried out her exercise bike and it was fine though she said my knee and foot position were all wrong. I’m having huge problems. Constant nervy pain down one side of my knee and about third of my leg. All the time, sometimes quite intense. On the opposite side of my knee I have swelling and a deep pain. I still have patches of bruising around the scar and physio said the fatty pad you have in the knee has got caught up in scar tissue and the blood from the bruise has no where to go. I’m also having to relearn to walk. Still hobbling. Physio said I had more problems than most going into the operation due to my curved spine and undeveloped pelvis and that it’s going to be a long haul. I have tons of exercises to build up muscles, glutes, as well as around the knee, to better support the knee. Even going up and down the stairs in a particular way. Moving around in bed also v painful. My knee is dominating my life at the moment and I hope it won’t always be that way!

Sorry to hear you have some pain or soreness around your new knee, I am five months post op, and still have a little soreness on occassions round the outside of the kneecap. You are doing well but do take care. I am having pain in my other knee from lack of exercise I think. But it is improving and good news that as a shielder I can go out more from April Fools Day which means I can celebrate my greatgranddaughters birthday outside weather permitting , two of them in one week ones 5 and ones 3. Hotwater bottles or heated pads do help the pain or soreness

Hi Judym , sorry to hear that your knee is painful and tender at the moment.

You're certainly doing the right thing by remaining as active and healthy as you can. It is normal to sometimes feel a little sore or uncomfortable after exercise, especially if it is something you haven’t done for a while, but it is important to remember that this does not mean that you are harming your joints. In fact, regular exercise is essential as it helps to strengthen the muscles that protect and support the joints. Exercise has even been proven to help reduce the pain of arthritis and improve function.

Having said this, do speak to your healthcare professional if the pain is becoming too much, as they may be able to suggest something to help depending on your specific situation.

More information on the importance of exercising around your joints can be found on the Arthritis Action charity website:
