Hi Jojo, sorry to hear you have this problem. It can be very disabling and painful. About five years ago I developed sharp pains in the joints at the base of my thumbs. I was referred to a specialist who said my x-rays showed I had osteoarthritis in both thumbs. He put me in splints and told me to take painkillers and give up my hobbies - I was only 53! Not happy with this I asked to be referred to a surgeon which resulted in me having both operated on, ten weeks apart and in plaster for six weeks with each one. The operation is called trapeziectomy and here I am, five years later, 99% painfree, strong grip and living my life! Hope this helps!

Hi there, I had my thumb joints x rayed several times by rheumatoligist and was told it was very inflammed was given splint, wax treatment, offered thumb injections, physio, adapted gadgets for home and paid to have my taps changed, it was put down to Osteoarthritis even though I was only in my thirties. My feet were xrayed as well because of swelling, blood tests were taken because of family history. So I imagine you will have to go through all this too.x PS I have gout also which causes swelling in the joints and very painful.
