Hi. I am new here. Have arthritius but not bad - only two flare ups in 13 years and no treatment ir meds. Can walk, garden (badly!), dance etc.. Today my knee is very swollen but no pain, just tight and a little stiff. I cant take ibuprofen.
Is this arthritis or should i worry about it. What best treatment? Ice? Heat?
Thanks in advance

Hi lallym, Just like you I cannot tolerate Ibuprofen. My knee has been bad since Easter. Eight years ago I had problems with my other knee. Intensive physio and excercise sorted it out. This time the physio available has not been up to much. I went private twice and had some on the NHS. I am still a firm believer in excercise and have found help on the internet, kneepainexplained.com is a very good site. They have come out with a book which I may buy.
Confirming my faith in exercise is that some other countries have treatment schemes with physio therapy and excercise. It is people like you, with not too advanced arthritis they are targeting. There are sound economic reasons for avoiding surgery. One can find quite a lot on YouTube. Being in bed with flu, I have had been looking at quite a few clips, mainly from Scandinavia, but also from Canada and Singapore. I have also downloaded two short books. I would be quite happy to share my findings if you are interested and very interested to hear about your experience of exercise.
The first time i had it i did have physio but that time i also had pain. My physio was NHS and did acupuncture. It went away so not sure what helped. 7 years later in 2011 i had a severe episode, very painful but that time it just went away without treatment.
This time i just have swelling but no pain which makes me question cause. I am sure it is the arthritis raising its head but all i read says usually painful.
I hope yours is not too severe. Good luck with research and thanks again.
Hi, I do not think anyone really knows what is involved in early arthritis. Be very careful with your knee. Mine started out with the leg just feeling a bit strange, then I went to the gym and did my usual program and it hurt after. A week or so later I went for a walk on uneven ground and that really did it, pain and swelling. The first physio insisted on using ice. I have later found that warmth really makes a difference.
Mine has improved and the last physio said I am too well for the NHS to provide any help. I just cannot walk any distance at anything like normal speed, which is very frustrating.
