Historical novels- especially the Tudors . The Brontes. Biography/ Autobiography if it's a person I'm interested in. I particularly like biogs of musicians and actors.
Sci-fi, thriller, non-fiction. I am picky about sci-fi. I prefer the kind that is more cerebral about the present than the future. I like drama fiction about life changing stuff too. Just fiction.
I haven't read a zombie book in a while but those I was not at all picky about. they were just fun at 99 cents.
I am also a scifi fan. I'm intrigued by your comment, can you give an example or two? Myself, I tend toward the "classics": Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, etc.
New York 2021 by Kim Stanley Robinson. I didn’t read Station Eleven but I saw the series. I recommend it. I think I gave it away but in another one they start out in a dead world and it ends up optimistic about rebuilding if you are persistent and adapt. Finch is also a movie based on a book that I recommend. If you see a theme it isn’t a mistake. We are facing a world that that is changing environmentally in unprecedented ways. These books imagine a future in different ways but they aren’t about abandoning the planet.
The older genre were about nation building. Leave the planet, find a world and build it into something. Besos and musk want to be nation builders. Zuck wants to be a virtual nation builder. New sci-fi asks what if we can’t? What if we are as tied to this planet as a parasite is to an animal? Why destroy the planet and leave anyway? if they start mass production of those ships where do we go that is better than here? Half a century ago it was easy to imagine leaving but now our time feels limited. Half a century ago the US was expanding after WW2 also. Sci-fi is always about the time they were written in.
I am going to look into these, thanks! I recently started reading again and I'm always looking for recommendations.
I haven’t read most of these but looks like a good list best-sci-fi-books.com/23-be...
Used to read all those at one time. Unfortunately, in UK many are now out of print.
Cheers, Midori
Asimov or Robinson? Out of print?
Asimov. Arthur C Clarke, HG Wells, John Wyndham, L. Sprague de Camp, Jules Verne, Anne Mc Caffrey, Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, and more I can't really remember.
there is no way Asimov is out of print. They just made a movie from one of his books! Same with those others. New generations are reading them.
In UK, I haven't seen an Asimov on the shelves for at least two years. Nor Anne McCaffery, or several other authors. Plenty of new authors, but not the deceased ones.
It seems to be a peculiarity of British publishing, unfortunately, Have to haunt the secondhand book stores to find any.
.

It’s probably because they are online or orderable. A brick and mortar store is going to cater to browsing customers of newer books that aren’t in the library yet. They can’t compete with Amazon. Plus a lot of people don’t read paper, especially kids who can get thousands of books on a nook or kindle.
Mine would be;True crime (been writing one for 13 years, the researching of it)
History; right across the board
Art reference
Crime detective; Ian Rankin, [Rebus]
Without a doubt and to no surprise to many who know me,my favorite genre is Medical Mysteries
I am truly a fan of Robin Cook, an American Physician & Novelist who
combines Medical Mysteries with Thriller Genre. xx
Poetry
Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Paranormal, Cozy Paranormal (Witches etc) in the main, but over the years have read mystery, western, thrillers etc. I have been reading for a very long time, my first fantasy novels were The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings in the mid sixties.
SciFi -- Asimov's "Foundation" novels, Arthur C. Clarke "Childhood's End", Larry Niven "Ringworld".
Fantasy -- Tolkien, Fritz Leiber "Fafrhd and the Grey Mouser" books, (cannot recommend these highly enough!) Piers Anthony's "Xanth" books.
Non-fiction -- Jared Diamond (his books will change how you think about the world and it's history). Stephen Hawking and Brian Greene (science for the layman).
I love sci Fi like I, Robot by Isaac Asimov.
But I like other book like The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky (that book made me cry 😭) and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
I used to love to read and become obsessed with certain books. Now I’m thinking I might have some form of ADD, because lately I will start to read a book but after awhile if it’s not holding my interest I’m just done with it! I’ve read a few too many self help books, I’m not counting on any book to give me some earth shattering insight about how to change my life anymore. I still like to read comic strips sometimes. Miss how people used to get the Sunday paper and read the funnies. Now we’re bombarded with news online all the time.
Ellington: "There are two kinds of music. Good music, and the other kind."
Even more true with words. Words can sing. I care.
I'm with you, coolkitty!
Fantasy, Sci-Fi and History for me, although Mystery also features.
Currently my favourite is Terry Pratchett; a mix of fantasy and humour!
Cheers, Midori
Mystery and Biography/Autobiography. Right now I’m reading The Stand by Stephen King. I’ve read some of his books many years ago but not this one.
I'm very into religion, psychology, philosophy, near-death experiences, and sociology books. I like the heady stuff.
