Song's About Mental Illness

I've come to realize that a majority of the music I listen to relates to trauma, mental health, fear, or other devastating life experiences. Some can help others understand what people are going through. Others are a way of expression for when you cannot bring yourself to say anything out loud.

WARNING: All of these songs are in the genre of metal. There is screaming, cursing, visual depictions of these illnesses and traumas, and it's overall just loud. Please by knowledgeable of your limits before listening. These songs are rather heavy for me and can certainly make someone sad, scared, or depressed. For your wellbeing, either look up the lyrics, abstain from watching the music videos, or listen to different segments of the songs to make sure you are capable of listening. Music is meant to be a tool for expression, processing, expression, and learning.

Snuff by Slipknot: Details heartbreak

Vermilion Pt.1 by Slipknot: Details toxic love and infatuation, the close to primal urge we can feel when we become encompassed by the sole desire to possess something or someone

Vermilion Pt.2 by Slipknot: Details living in the toxicity, loneliness, and the feeling of abandonment from a supposed lover.

Falling Away From Me by Korn: Details abuse

45 by Shinedown: Details the experience of reaching the end of the line. Being completely unsure of where your life is going. Experiencing all your mistakes and regrets, and contemplating the worthiness of life. Followed by the debate of whether or not you can change your life for the better.

Master of Puppets by Metallica: Details the enslavement to a substance and details the rage, fear, and despair when the 'fix' no longer fixes anything.

Confusion by Metallica: Details the effects of PTSD. Specifically PTSD from combat, but the definition portrayed by the song can quite accurately describe the effects for all with the condition.

Sick Like Me by In This Moment: Details the side of a toxic and sexually abusive relationship.

Whore by In This Moment: Details more of the toxicity of forced submission and dependency on an individual for affection.

The In Between by In This Moment: Details childhood abuse and being ostracized religiously and socially for being different.

Prison Sex by Tool: Details the after effects of rape ranging from violation, fear, depression, and far more.

Schism by Tool: Details loss of love and the failures of communication.

Thank you for the post, it pointed me in the direction of Tool's "Schism" -- and some of its lyrics hit home.

Very surprised to find I enjoyed some of these. Thank you.

Everybody hurts, REM. Written about suicide.

The Sound of Silence... many artists sing this.,, to me it's about depression.

Walk, by Blind Melon. Relate to it so hard.

Evidence, by Faith No More. Deals with sexual trauma in a deceptively melodic way.

Down in a Hole, by Alice in Chains. I was a 90's kid and I'm only slightly ashamed to say Layne Staley was my spirit animal for years.

Hurt, by Nine Inch Nails. For reasons that should be obvious.

You're Somebody Else, by Flora Cash. The chorus on this one hits me really hard.

That's all I can think of now. Aside from Down in a Hole, these songs aren't aggressive musically. Tried to post ones that would appeal to a broad range of musical tastes. Faith No More and Blind Melon are two of my favorite bands and are criminally underappreciated. They both had one huge single and unfortunately that's where most people's exposure to them ends. Both bands had so much more to offer. Okay I'll get down off my soapbox now, that is all lol.
