Hi artwanna, actually I have one myself tonight. First thing it's a sign of being

dehydrated. Water is important in avoiding headaches both tension as well as migraine.

As for lowering the fullness and tight feeling in the back of head and face, we need to find

a quiet place to tune out the world for a while. The tension headache is coming from the

tight trigger points in the neck and shoulders.

After hydrating, find a quiet place. Place a small pillow at your lower back, bring your

shoulders down away from your ears. Lower the lights, make sure the temperature of

the room is cool. Place a microwavable shoulder wrap or take a bath towel out of the

dryer and wrap it around your shoulders and neck. Sometimes sipping on hot tea or

decaf coffee can help in warming the insides which will help calm the over sensitized

nervous system.

Place a light blanket across your lap. Do not read or watch tv but slowly start to do

breathing exercises. Close your eyes as you breathe deeply in and then exhale long

and slow. Start Imagery Meditation. Take yourself on a quiet escape for a few minutes.

If negative thoughts come into mind, push them aside and keep meditating.

I usually am walking down a long hall that has a large door at the end. Once I reach the

door, I slowly open it to find my own place of respite. A beautiful garden of flowers and

babbling brooks. The scent of these flowers calms my inner self. I am barefoot taking each step in the warm soft sand beneath me. I breathe as I take each step forward.

I reach another door and as I walk through it, I'm walking on billowy clouds. Actually

feel no tenseness, light and airy. I no longer am thinking about my day or my problems.

It feels so good to feel the pressure in my head come down. To feel the tightness in my

face and jaw get lower.

I think you get the picture artwanna. It's anything you want it to be. You make up the

story. You take the journey into a stress free place . Usually 10 min is all you need to feel

the difference. If you wanted to take an OTC pain med that would have been okay. I usually don't need it. Once you train your imagination to take over and to respond to

quiet time, it will happen more quickly each time. This is also good to do on a stressful

day before you go into headache mode. Feel better, Breathe xx

foxglove_pnw, practicing relaxation, hydrating and deep breathing daily can

better help you in avoiding tension headaches. I know this will be hard

to believe but by the time I finished writing my response, my head symptoms

were gone because I was writing I was doing what I preach. Went to bed pain free,

relaxed and slept well through the night. Wish you well xx

I am so glad you had a good night sleep ❤️

I still don’t know how to relax ! I woke up with the same headache, pressure on my forehead , eyes hurting , a feeling that my eyes can’t focus on anything and overall anxiety . My urge is to run to the ER .

Trying to calm down !

Hi foxglove, Try not to be so hard on yourself. After all this didn't happen overnight

for me. I spent many years with tension/contraction headaches only interrupted by migraines. It was a nightmare, but nightmares do end eventually.

Everything you are sensing, I did as well.

Of course it brings your anxiety into high gear.

The thing is to find methods that will reduce your stress and pain naturally

thru meditation or whatever should work for you. Taking the time each time

in looking forward to those few moments of calmness will pay for itself in

hours of pain free days and reduced anxiety.

Breathe my friend. xx

This is interesting, you know I always feel like I'm going to faint from these tension headaches, do you think this is normal ?..

Just curious

QUICH...whenever we are in any kind of pain, we can tend to

either hold our breath or hyperventilate causing that dizzy feeling.

Also know that with any kind of headache, hydration is all important.

It can help with not only the headache but the faint feeling as well.

Always let your doctor know how you are feeling and what you are

experiencing. He is the medical professional. :) xx

Hello artwanna! I’m late to this but I have really bad tension headaches that sometimes develop into migraines from anxiety and also the after effect of a really bad fever I had. My headaches are usually accompanied by vision and hearing problems, facial weakness, or dizziness even if I don’t have much head pain. It’s very annoying but the one medication that works wonders is Excedrine migraine. It’s essentially Tylenol, caffeine and aspirin all combined in one to knock out the pain. After taking 600 mg ibuprofen throughout the day every day and it working for very short periods of time, I decided to give Excedrine migraine a try. It knocks out my headaches and accompanying symptoms for 3 days at the very least. I haven’t had to take one in 8 days which has been great. I highly recommend that because it works wonders.

Sadly no OTC meds has helped mine not even the migraine one. It’s constant 24/7 for several months now. :-(

I have tried everything, but not giving up.
