Hi Purl1,rispiridone I haven't been on it personally but if the side effects are too great I would mention this to your doctor and it can also put your weight up ,its a psychotic drug, meaning it acts on the brain .hopefully you can get something else ,and you feel better.
I took it for seven years with major side effects. I would go into an elevator and not realize for a while I had to push the button. Also lots of weight gain, swelling, dizziness. It causes most on it to become diabetic and have high risk for heart disease and stroke. It's so hard to get off of causing hallucinations and psychosis. I had auditory hallucinations as well while trying to quit. Alot of people can't get off or go to the hospital in the process.. I would get off that quick!
Purl, what is it being prescribed for. Like others said, it is first off, an antipsychotic medication used to treat folks with psychotic symptoms. As such it is a powerful medication, but beneficial to those who need it. I’m noticing that many doctors are now using this and some of the newer antipsychotics to ‘boost’ the effects of their anti depressants and/or anti anxiety meds. I’m not so sure I’m on board with that. I feel that should be a very last resort. Maybe try a different anxiety or depression med first. So proceed cautiously. As to side effects, all i’ve Heard of is the weight gain and consequently diabetic concerns. Bottom line, yes, talk to your doctor!
Absolutely, very scary,GPs are as I said before only too ready to hand out those type of drugs ie(psychotic)one person who was put on them was an elderly neighbour ,who was in her 80s and allegedly slightly uncooperative with the carers---and was given at night as a form of sedative and as a result put on weight-----as she sat all day by the fire ..good job she was quite thin before.its dreadful...no concern for Her wellbeing....longterm ;that was many years ago ,but I cant forget this form of treatment.
