What are the functions of each of these jobs? And what is their responsibility to their patients? Are psychiatrists only there to prescribe meds? Should counselors follow up when their patients forget to schedule appointments? How long should they talk to you and what advice should they be giving you?

Psychiatrists, Psychologists, and Counselors
Hi LMCello,
Primary care providers and GPs are the first point of call for most people with a health concern. It is the point in the mental health care system where most care is delivered. Referrals are made to the other 3 mental health professionals for specialist psychological treatment.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who are experts in diagnosing and treating mental illness. You can expect a high level of skill in the services (prescribing treatment and providing therapy) they provide.
Clinical psychologists specialise specifically in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental health problems. Treatment is using psychological therapy (talking about and working through problem areas). Usually are not medical doctors and cannot prescribe medication.
Counselors are generally classed as allied health professionals who have been trained in mental health conditions.
Counselors often operate as part of a multidisciplinary care team that includes psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, case managers and others invested in the client’s /patient welfare. They make referrals to community agencies, treatment programs, and other medical professionals in order to connect the client with resources that will best support his or her needs.
The role of all mental health professionals is to support the identification, treatment and management of depression, anxiety and suicidal behaviour in their patients.
The length of time per session and how frequently depends on the individual presentation and where the person is on their journey to recovery.
In a therapeutic relationship, both the therapist (whatever their training) and patient work together to replace problematic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors with more adaptive ones to restore mental health and wellbeing.
