I’ve been on apixaban for just over 2 months and have 3 weeks to go, then 4 weeks off before a d dimer blood test.
I’ve had awful stomach cramps for a couple of weeks, blood in stools and leaking watery blood like I’m wetting myself (lovely picture!).
The doctor is sending me for the fast track bladder and bowel tests plus doing a urine test. I’ve never had anything like this in my life. I know the blood can be a side effect of blood thinners.
Has anyone else experienced effects like this? I was thinking of calling the anticoagulant nurses and seeing if it’s worth reducing my apixaban as I don’t have long to go - but I also don’t want to risk not getting rid of any lasting bits of my DVT (I know that’s not exactly how it works).

Hi Florrie, sorry but I can’t really help you, I was on Apixaban for a short while but didn’t get on with it! So went back on Warfarin and do my home testing myself. Take Care ❤️
Hi Florrie, I’m sorry you’re having such a bad experience on Apixaban. I have been on it for nearly a year and so far have not noticed any serious side effects.
I do have the occasional bout of diarrhea and also quite a bit of hair loss, but decided that being protected from a stroke was worth losing some hair.
I think you should consult your care provider and see if the problems you’re having with the drug can be resolved as soon as possible. Indeed, I hope that by now, you will have seen your doctor as this is a rather late reply, I’m so sorry.
I do hope you are feeling better now and I wish you good health. Take care.
Thanks for your reply. They’ve actually discovered an issue so maybe the apixaban has done me a favour. It doesn’t explain everything though so good to know it’s not just me.
