Hi, I've just been prescribed apixaban and bisoprolol due to AF, I'm a bit worried to take apixaban due to the change of lifestyle you need to take, am I getting overly concerned or is there precautions I need to take, also we like to have many continental holidays yearly and I've read some travel insurance won't entertain blood thinners.Any help and information will be appreciated.
Cheers.

It might be worth Posting this on the AF Association Forum as well, and which has a much larger membership. Lots of experience there on these medications. But you will need to join first. Easy to do. Perhaps you might also fill out your Bio more to indicate the frequency of your AF, as well as the dosages and frequency of your medications. It gives Forum members a better context for answering your Posts.
Generalising horribly, you probably won't get travel insurance if you have AF and you aren't on anti-coagulants.
You don't really need to change your lifestyle because you are on anti-coagulants. I describe it as meaning a life-theatening injury is a bit more life-threatening. Unless you're in the habit of causing yourself serious injuries, you won't need to change anything and, probably, won't notice much difference if you have a minor injury.
I have been taking Apixaban since November 2014 and can reassure you that this medication has not had any impact whatsoever on my lifestyle, unlike Warfarin!
I have also flown to European cities without any fuss whatsoever!
If your in the UK then insurancewith.com will definitely insure you. I've been on Apixaban for over 3 years. Pretty much cut out alcohol but that's for other health reasons. Otherwise no issues so far. Good luck.
I've been on Apixaban for years, & haven’t changed my lifestyle at all.I'm not saying people should be like me, but I haven't expected any issues myself.
I just returned from a flight from Barbados this weekend & I've flew to Australia & back just a few years ago.
I still drink lots of alcohol etc.
I suppose it's just an individual's choice, but personally, I like to live my life while I can 😊
What I have read is alcohol ( a lot) is a risk taken WITH blood thinners ,a lot of Italians live to old ages without blood thinners . ( wine region culture ) . Have you seen men bleeding profusely on tv after booze up and a punch , ( in head) ?
I will have a tot of Baileys in winter . I figure the cream will thicken the whisky 😂 Joke . Not G P advise 😂
A bad head injury is a b l E E d . . I won’t cycle or skate board at 70 😂 on blood thinners . ( no big sharp knives in my drawer . I buy pre chopped hard veg) paranoid ? Yup .
Thanks for the reply, I've read that drinking more than a couple of drinks a day is dangerous, I like a few good drinks on a weekend, usually more than the supposed weekly allowance,if alcohol thins the blood can you miss a apixaban tablet instead? So bloody confusing. Cheers.
ASK YOUR HAEMATOLOGIST SPECIALIST WHO KNOWS YOUR INDIVIDUAL CLOT BLEED RISK . ( They will not tell you it’s OK to abruptly stop blood thinners) . We are not Doctors on here , nobody should say yes to your question . Alcohol has blood thinning risk taken with blood thinners . 👋
hi…I’ve just come across this question. What changes to lifestyle have you been advised when taking Apixaban? I’ve now been taking it for 3 years following x2 DVT’s. The only change I’ve made is not taking ibuprofen . I still do everything I used to. I travel long haul, run , road bike, gravel ride. I’m really curious as to what you’ve been told. Thanks.
Hi, basically don't do anything that can cause an injury, like sports, rugby, boxing etc, don't drink alcohol over the guide lines per week,Take care shaving (obviously).
