Hi, I would like to know how can i help a student with leukodystrophy, he is 13 years old he is not taking any treatment. he is sometimes aggressive, it seems that he does not understand instructions,

and refuses to do what is asked. when we (his mom and me) talk to him about his behavior, he seems not to understand, sometimes he mocks and other times he tries to divert attention to other topics.

I dont know how to help him, we are from Mexico and our health system does not cover this type of diseases. But i would like to know is there

some strategy not related to medicine that we can use and help him with his behavior at school and at his home.

I would appreciate your help!

Hi, my son showed symptoms at age 6. In school he was very like you describe yourself student. We had trouble with him not knowing what to do and appearing not to understand what was wanted from him.

When he was first diagnosed a test he had that involved a brain scan was done. It found he did not have a hearing, problem, but that the audio signals from his ears were not getting to his brain stem. It was very hard to deal with the anger and he would bang his head against things because he appeared to be frustrated with himself. I used to put my arms around him, hold him from doing damage to himself. Other times he would be almost hysterical, unable to regulate his emotions.

He went to special school as he was unable to interact at his junior school.

This is an awful condition with very little in the way of good endings.

Being able to continue to go to school is great for these children, I hope you can continue to help him make some happy times in what will be his short life.

I will be thinking of you

Hillary xx
