Has anyone been advised by their doctors against having vaccinations with live viruses? Doctor told us that for people with compromised immune systems (ALD/AMN patients) vaccinations with 'dead viruses' were ok but those composed of 'live viruses' were potentially harmful.

No I have never heard this said. I am also a bit sceptical about the claim that ALD/AMN patients automatically have compromised immune systems. I have never heard any doctor say this. I will email my friendly consultant to get his view on this.

Best wishes

I finally had a reply on this from my consultant, Dr Robin Lachmann, at the National Hospital, Queen's Square (London).

He says that someone with decreased cell mediated immunity (e.g. from chemotherapy) shouldn’t have live vaccines.

However, he is not aware of any evidence that AMN/ALD significantly affects the immune system apart from the fact that anyone with Addison’s, whatever the cause, is at increased risk if they stop their steroids.

So, I think all this means is that someone with Addision's may be compromised if they don't take their steroids; those without any Addison's have perfectly normal immune systems.

Best wishes

I think from a immunity standpoint that it is not the disease per-say that might make a live vaccine dangerous but that those with Addisons would be on steroids which could then lower the immune system. I have also heard that there can be reactions to live vaccines for people with mitochondrial disease but I do not know if ALD is considered as such (i remember reading about a case years ago with the MMR and they went to court due to young person's reaction but I don't think it was ALD). I had all my shots as a kid without in incident. Just my thoughts.. I could be wrong.

The post I made above from Dr Lachmann says unequivocally that the immune system for AMN is NOT affected UNLESS you DON'T take your steroids when you also have Addison's.

Vaccination has been proved effective to prevent flu and other disease. : Vaccine is really secured. Most response of immunization, for occasion, having hurt in arms, feveret are for the most part flashing. It is extraordinary to have a true mischance and it will get watchful screen and

examination if the setback happened. Likewise, the rate of checking specialists' avoiding suffering is basically more than he rate of having deviousness.goo.gl/Hte2HC
