Back for ablation number 2

Got a surprise phone call from the hospital last week. They’d had a cancellation, so I’m going in for a re-do ablation tomorrow😬😬😬 I wasn’t expecting to get it done till August! I so, so hope it works this time🤞The AF episodes are more than monthly and they’re really interfering with my quality of life. Each one puts me out of action for a day, and then I’m exhausted and breathless for several days after. Which feels ridiculous at my age (67) as I keep myself slim and fit, never smoked, don’t drink any more. My first ablation was exactly a year ago, and that was cryo. This time they’re using RF. I just want to be free of this illness and be able to make plans again without always having them scuppered. Wish me luck!

Hope you have a successful outcome and long lasting NSR but do remember to be especially careful with your recovery, slow and gradual does it.

Thanks so much. I thought I was careful with my recovery last time, but I think I’ll be even more so this time round!

Good luck for tomorrow. Hope it’s a big success. It’s a much better date than August because you have got the warmer weather coming to recuperate. Look after yourself, with lots of TLC. 🥰

I’m the same age as you and had my 2nd ablation in January and thankfully apart from the usual postop flutters and couple of af episodes I am now completely symptom free and remaining in NSR - just waiting on my 3m f/up - hope all goes well with you too 🤞

Good luck and hope all goes well. I had my second in September and apart from one blip I've felt great. Like you I was having monthly episodes of 2 to 3 days.

Fingers crossed it will work this time. Otherwise, Flecainide might work for you as it has done at putting an end to episodes for me.

As somebody of the same age, I think I know how you feel. I had a successful ablation 5 years ago at Papworth (just before lockdown) and have been fortunate enough to have no further episodes of AF until last week, so ablation can work well. However, sadly, I was blue-lighted to hospital last week with a pulse of 250+ and blood pressure too low to read so another ablation is likely. I was sorted in the short term with cardioversion but now expecting further issues until the ablation can be done.

As others have said, do be careful with your recovery and the very best of luck.

Crikey 250 . It’s amazing how much stress the heart can take . Was it like that before your ablation ? How scary . We’re you put on any meds after your ablation . My husband wasn’t , hence having a stroke in 2023

Thanks for your concern. No, before my ablation it was more like 160. I am on twice daily apixaban and 7.5mg bisoprolol, which I was put on after my stroke and before my ablation. After the ablation I came off amiodarone, which is a horrible drug, so this was a great relief. After my ablation I was given the option of coming off apixaban but fortunately decided to stay on it as the lesser of two evils. Every clinician I saw last week said how good a decision that had turned out to be. There have been no changes to medication since last week and I am waiting for an appointment with the relevant consultant.

I just got my "cacellation" call from the hospital and go in on Monday for my second go. The first did improve my condition quite a lot but they think they can improve it more.

I had my second RF ablation 5 weeks ago and so far it has worked. I was having about four episodes a month which as you say are very tiring and disruptive.

Good luck and hope all goes well.

Wishing you all the very very best for a successful result this time. Take things steady and start planning for your adventures 😊

I had mine done exactly a year ago and have had quite a few episodes that affect me the same as you. They are not for as long as they used to be but I can't plan to do anything as I always seem so unreliable.

Take care xxx

thank you to everyone for your kind wishes. They’re keeping me in overnight as I was late out of theatre.

Has anyone else experienced this horrible side effect : I’ve become really deaf! Struggling to hear the nurses and doctors when they talk to me. Everything is muffled. The drs are taking it seriously and talking about organising an MRI of my head in the morning if it hasn’t resolved itself. Talk of a possible small stroke😬

Very sorry to read this & hope it isn't permanent. If you feel up to it, maybe write another post to update everyone because we need to know the risks associated with afib procedures.

Oh no . Keep us posted how you’re doing . My husband has already had a stroke but the consultant said he a confident a second ablation shouldn’t effect him as he s on blood thinners but now I’m doubting him . We’re you on blood thinners ?

Outsidethelines profile image
Outsidethelines in reply toJackiesmith7777

Don’t worry, Jackie, it doesnt look Iike it was a stroke at all. Sorry if that gave you stress as regards your husband’s procedure. Thankfully the hearing loss turned out to be temporary 🤞🤞🤞I more or less slept it off. I think it was a rare side effect of the anaesthetic. It had the doctors baffled, but a couple of the experienced nurses on the cardiac ward had come across it before. I’ve just spent my second night in hospital. Very different from my first ablation when I was home the same night. They couldn’t stop the bleeding from the puncture wound in my groin, my BP went too low and my heart rate too high. But hopefully they’re getting it all under control now and I’ll be allowed home today. It’s certainly been reassuring to be here rather than at home, with the doctors and nurses saying out all manner of tests, including one who arrived with a portable ultrasound machine to scan my heart.

Lucky you, you have no time to worry about your Op, I hope it goes well for you,

very best of luck. I would take it very slowly post op for the first few weeks. I’ve found a meditative mindset to be really helpful to minimise stress (which almost certainly caused my AF in the first place).

I know the feeling. I get my 2nd ablation tomorrow. Recently had 16 days of debilitating AFib. They did a cardioversion and that helped a lot.

Let us know how yours went and hire your feeling.

My husband is being considered for a second ablation at the John Radcliffe hospital. He is waiting to get approved as his first one in 2017 had failed but we didn’t know because he s asymptomatic with AF and suffered a stroke a year and a half ago . His ejection fraction has gone up from 33 to 42 . The consultants said sinus rhythm will hopefully strengthen his heart even more. Yours only lasted a year ? My husband had the wire threaded up through his leg I think they burnt the pathway that was causing the problem . What is the new method your having ?
