I understand that ibuprofen can interactwith anticoalgulates and should be avoided. Normally paracetamol does the job for me .

I have a painful back strain, is it ok to take co-codamol.

Hi Mear.

Ibuprofen is a big no-no if taken with anticoagulants and can increase the risk of bleeding. Ask your doctor about co-codamol as it can lead to more AFib episodes.

Thank you, think I will stick with paracetamol,

Paulbounce profile image
Paulbounce in reply tomear1957

Good idea Mear. I always take 2 and a half paracetamol. The strength of each tablet is 500mg = total of 1250mg. The extra half really makes a difference for me. I don't suggest you do this without consulting a medic first.

That's interesting Paul. I take it that you do not take more than 8 in 24 hours ? I've always been wary of 'over dosing' on paracetamol since I was in hospital next to an old lady who had overdosed! ( deliberately I might add ☹️ )

Morning Jalia.

Sure - you have to be careful when taking extra than the recommended dose. I've always been fine with a 'little' extra of paracetamol but it's best to check with your Doc first.

Hi

But with Paracetamol you can take a total of 2 x 500g x 4 times a day so by taking 1250 divide into total for 24 hours will almost get there x only 3 times a day.

Be very careful not to arrive at TOXIC.

What abour paracetamol and codeine combined pill.

Trouble these are for pain only and not to get inflammation down.

After 2 operations

1. OCY-NORM for 3 days only

2. TRAMADOL

These two above were to prevent severe pain.

Remember that any med can be addictive but some worst than others.

My cousin in Canada died as she overdosed on one of the OXY-COTTON meds.

She was 21. SAD.

Hi Joy.

Co-codamol is a mix of paracetamol and codeine. It's the codeine that could cause a problem.

I take CoCodamol and it doesn't affect my AF at all. Similarly my husband.

Ibuprofen can actually cause arrhythmias and should be avoided.

Hi Julia.

Co-codamol can lower BP which in turn might affect HR for some.

I've never been warned of this. I think it would only apply to high doses. Its never had this effect on me......15/500mg prescription only .Occasionally (rarely) used 30/500mg

Correct regarding nsaids such as ibuprofen. Ibuprofen gel is OK

I am allowed to take co codamol as a kind of last resort if my back pain becomes intolerable. I can take a certain amount, but only for 3 days. I have never taken more than one day's worth though.

You must check with your consultant regarding dosage though.

I have been on anticoagulants for a bit over 15 years and was told the best pain killer for me is CoCodomol 30/500 - presciption grade. Of all that time - I've been on Edoxaban for 6 months ( total disaster ) and Warfarin for the rest of the time - still on Warfarin and still self test. Was also told - given my AF circumstances not to take Ibuprofen or similar.

Interesting to read you have calf pain . I am worried about calf pain and behind the knee very painful. Leg is not hot or swollen so I don't think it's a clot.

I had pain in my left calf for about 8 years on and off confused it with sports injury. In March 2023 had 5 week illness, pain in left calf, dry cough, massive fatigue, couldn't walk up hills,AFIB detected.I was failed by my GPs and A & E.It was only that DVT moved from calf and blew my leg up twice the size that it was diagnosed.PE which left me with AFIB.Still get calf pain sometimes.Ablation done in Nov 24,everything good so far x

I have to take 30/500 co-codamol (highest you can get o/c is 8/500) when I have a gallbladder attack and not experienced any AF issues.

BenHall1 profile image
BenHall1 in reply toDucky2003

Yeah agree Ducky .... 30/500 is what I take when my bloody left shoulder pain kicks off - never any issues with it - AF nor anything else, except pain relief, which is its purpose anyway.

To be honest, when the gallbladder kicks in, anything less doesn't touch it.

Swimsyroke profile image
Swimsyroke in reply toDucky2003

Dear DuckyI had three bad gallbladder attacks in August September and October. Nothing since.

I have to wait a year to see a specialist but am worried that it will turn into an emergency.

I'm wondering how you cope with yours and if you are waiting to have the gallbladder removed. I know nothing about this condition as it came quite out of the blue.

Ducky2003 profile image
Ducky2003 in reply toSwimsyroke

Hi. Mine started about 5 years ago, with a couple of attacks, a year apart, I just thought was a dodgy tum. It was only when I collapsed in pain and ambulanced to hospital and eventually given morphine, that I realised how excruciating the pain could be. I've had a few attacks since and more frequently. I know my main triggers are fatty pastry, like samosas, sausage rolls or pork pie, so avoid those.

Sometimes, taking a 30/500 co-codamol at the first twinge, along with being sick and angling myself in a certain position can help with not having to go to hospital to be dosed up with morphine.

They do want to remove it but won't until I've had the mitral valve repair surgery I'm waiting for.

Anyone who has gallstones has my sympathies as its pain, the like of which, I've never known.

Hi

Insist on your gall bladder taken out.

I did finally and said my grandfather had his out. Start each day with real lemon drink.

No gall stones but my balls showing were blood balls and the gall bladder had totaly disintegrated!

2000 removed. Never looked back. Just keep on a low fat diet. No chicken skin fat - worst. And chezels take only a few not alot.

My surgeon worked well. Only 2 clips. 5 port holes to pick the remenents off other organs!

Hi

In 2000 I did not have AF. Had stroke with rapid & persistent % Thyroid Cancer which cause the AF to the clot to the Stroke.

Yes, of course but now they remove it out through the tummy button.

Be careful what you eat after. The melted cheese in a pasta dish was a no no. It will go through loose. Other chicken fat.

As time goes by foods become better to eat.

Dont say lowfat on aeroplanes as I ended up with YOLK only. tasteless quin..? etc.

Drain fish and chips well and take milk after or icecream.

At last free of episodes, mouth ulcers, food regurgitating, heart burn. acid in mouth.

Remember after careful on spices.

** Always say that you want a special anaesthetic because of the above.

I come out of any operation HUNGRY. Ha ha.

Do take care. The last episode big I passed out having an omelette when I said use 1 egg. It was so bright yellow. Used powered egg.

Thanks again for your very helpful comments Joy As I also have IBS and food mainly goes straight through me I'm finding it all very difficult and stressful. I can't put on any weight, am underweight and always hungry.

I just have to be patient. I think my GP has also lost faith in the state of the NHS and such long waiting times.

Heyho keep smiling.

JOY2THEWORLD49 profile image
JOY2THEWORLD49 in reply toSwimsyroke

Hi

Be positive because it just might be the gall bladder problem causing your IBS.

Cheese should bulk you up.

How about UP & GO which has equivalent 2 weetbix and added vitamins in it.

Cross fingers when you have gall bladder out - FREEDOM from suffering.

I also changed to sour dough bread. Rasy on digestion.

Also remember with no gall bladder, bile drips in 24 hours.

You will have not have the healthy gall bladder only pushing as much bile as needed for your meal. So any over fat will go straight through you - mine does next day though.

I guess you are careful what you eat now.

I had a slipped disc in my neck and was in significant pain from the inflammation. I was told by both my doc and the pharmacist that ibuprofen is only a problem if you take it for more than a few days as it can affect the stomach and cause bleeding which of course if you are on anticoagulants is more of a problem. I take Lansoprazole though which helps guard against this.

I have never been told by either my cardiologist or EP, GP or pharmacist that ibuprofen affects my AF or to avoid codeine either.

Which of these medics is correct I wonder?

JOY2THEWORLD49 profile image

Hi

I used to take ibuprofen 100mg for prevention in knee but then on 3rd year cut out the meniscus full tear out. This awful tear did not show on MRI on 2012 or 2015.

I asked the orthopaedic to check it late January whilst he was checking my elbow brace.

In late April I am now lined up to discuss surgery for both. Inhave some tramadol and paracetamol and codeine not used uless the dates have run out.

Unfortunately I suffer from chronic knee and hip pain and have been taking 30mg codeine and 1000mg of paracetamol 4 times a day for years now before and after my successful ablation, I have taken ibuprofen occasionally if my knee is swollen and too painful, I have noticed eptopics rhythm problem but this happens usually at night when my other pain killers have worn off and I need to sleep, hopefully knee and hip replacement will sort me out, but like everything NHS it just takes time.

Lewis1234 profile image

Have looked it up on NHS and it does say to not take Ibuprofen with ACs. Bonkers really that no GP or EP (after recent ablation) has ever mentioned this to me.

I think you are being totally unreasonable to think that a GP or EP would discuss it with you.😂😂😂😀

I’ve taken Co-Codamol for many years for bad headaches and it has never been a problem. Basically it’s Paracetamol 500mg with Codeine 8mg added. My GP even prescribed a stronger version with 15mg of Codeine for my back pain but that was a bridge too far. I was like a zombie. It has never affected my AF or the AV re entrant tachycardia which I also have. I have a strong version of Ibuprofen prescribed for my knee OA but that is topically only for obvious reasons.

Hope this helps

I take Cocodamol every day but if I went into af I’d stop it until af passes. This is because af lowers my heart rate and cocodamol slows things down even more. Under medical supervision I take Naproxen. Max dose is 2 per day but I try to limit it to one.

Jalia profile image
Jalia in reply tojd2004

My husband went into AF for the first time, as far as we know, when on a course of Naproxen. NSAID s have been shown to actually promote arrhythmias and are not advised.

Is your heart rate dangerously low in AF?

Hi

Naproxem does nothing for me.

Ibroprofen worked when the gynaecologist gave it to me for painful first 24 hours. He said get it into your system 24 hours prior to 'starting'.

He said this would work on 10% of people. A med for arthritis sufferers too.

It was a great fix as usually I was 'on time'.

I take co-codamol whenever I need something stronger than paracetamol and have never had any problems. I've also taken dihydrocodeine which if I have found more effective if pain is more severe (mine was lower back pain and sciataica), again with no problems.

Hi

Do your exercise on the floor. Pass one leg over the other slowly. One leg straight on floor and the other as high as possible in the air.

This exercises opens up the gap and stops the nerve pinching.

Try it. It works every time with me.

There is anoter back spasm med. NORFLEX. The hospital gave it to me.

When I mentioned ibuprofen. It was as a negative because someone had been told they could take it. I was told I could take acetaminophen a.k.a. but like everything it should be in moderation and not very long. I am not familiar with the mentioned I use tramadol for my chronic back problems even that I try to use sparingly I have been off and on it for many years and never had issues again moderation plus if you take things steadily pretty soon you’ll find out they no longer work as well

Try heat for the pain - a heating pad or hot water bottle (not too hot, not directly on bare skin). I used to take ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, and aspirin to manage my various medical issues but no longer can because of my apixaban, and I get minimal relief with acetaminophen.

So far this year I have sprained my ankle (January) and now possibly also my knee (I fell last week). I used an ice pack for the first day or two to reduce swelling, followed by a hot water bottle as needed to relieve my pain. Heat can work amazingly well to relieve pain and can be a great alternative when you can't take a pain killer.

An aside for those in the States: paracetamol is acetaminophen. The label on mine says no more than "4000 mg in 24 hours". Abuse is the leading cause of liver damage in the States.

I believe that all NSAID drugs, which includes the likes of naproxen, aspirin and ibuprofen, can cause small haemorrhages to form in the gastric tract. Under the influence of anticoagulant drugs, these can bleed more easily and for longer. I recall reading once read that even a single dose of an NSAID has been shown to cause some small amount of blood loss.
