Surgery & A-fib — Update

Update: I had 90-minute biopsy surgery on Dec. 4.

Apixaban was paused for 36 hours and I was bridged with a low-dose "baby aspirin" as a stroke preventative measure. Restarted apixaban morning after the surgery. All remains well. My fears about stroke were natural but unfounded.

Aside from some substantial wounds, which will heal, I am recovering well with a bit of rest and light pain meds .

Strange phenomenon post- surgery — flutters/palpitations are totally gone. My GP says that I was probably just nervous for the three weeks preceding surgery. Perhaps, but it is certainly an odd coincidence. I’ll take the “win” either way.

Thank you, all my fellow travellers, for your support and assurances.

My doctor says stopping Apixaban for a short while is not a problem unless you are in a prolonged bout of AF when obviously the risk of clots is higher

Daughter is an anaesthetist, she tells me that lots of her patients have AF.

Good luck, I would do plenty of brisk walks when not taking Apixaban and before surgery.

Well, I don't know what comorbidities you have, if any, but I am almost 78 (with Chads2 score of 2) and still haven't started using my apixaban prescription because of my intracranial bleed fears, notwithstanding the stroke risks. Just shows how individual are our concerns re strokes and bleeds.

Just to add, stopping apixaban for a medical procedure is a well trodden path. Good luck.
