Hi Everyone

I am booked in for a Hernia key hole op (general anaesthetic) and will as advised have to come off my Apixaban before the Op. I have Paroxysmal A/fib and wondered if this puts me at higher risk during the Op and how it might possibly affect my A/fib post Op?.....thanks in advance for any advice or experience

Apixaban being an anticoagulant will not affect your AF regardless of any thing. Your surgeon should advise you but normally stop the day before and re-start next day. With warfarin it is obviously longer but DOACs have very short half life so need less time to clear the body.

Good luck and I hope you have no more trouble than I did when mine was done. Back to normal in a couple of days and no special restrictions but I did have the kevlar mesh version.

Hi Davidpeaty, I have just had surgery 3 weeks ago with a GA. I was advised to stop Apixaban 48hrs before. I am very pleased to say that I had no problems with stopping the Apixaban & no problems during or after the surgery with my AF. I hope you your's goes as well as mine because it's worrying isn't it

Hi David peaty, I've just had surgery and stopped taking Apixaban 2 days before it and chose to stay off it for 5 days after making 7 days in total. I wanted to make sure the healing process wasn't compromised by lack of blood cutting around the wound. I'm doing well with no healing complications and seatarted the Apixaban. Good luck.

I also have Paroxysmal Afib/AFlutter. I had hernia surgery under general anesthesia 5 weeks ago, and all went quite well. My surgeon spoke with my EP and it was agreed that I should stop my apixaban for 3 days prior to the surgery. I started taking it again the day after my surgery. My EP did not feel that this protocol was particularly risky, during surgery or afterwards, in regards to bleeding or going out of rhythm. This was the second surgery I have had using this protocol. Best of luck with your surgery!

I had an inguinal hernia mesh repair in 2017 under local anaesthetic. As I recall I had to only stop my morning dose of Apixaban. The hardest thing was trying not to cough during the procedure😀! Slight infection of the wound which required antibiotics, but after some early pain all good since.

Make sure you are well hydrated by IV! I just went through a bad experience without it and had the worst AF ever.
