I'm to come off Warfarin 5 days before my hip surgery next week so naturally have similar worries! We'll just have to trust our medics !

I was off Apixaban for 3 days after an accident which led to a hip replacement. You do not really have a choice.

They have to tell you of all the risks including stroke . I had them read out to me. Every time I had one of my multiple cardioversions a list of risks was read out to me, including death.

No problem I had to come off for 3 days before my total knee replacement two years ago and then go on half dose of anticoagulants for a month had no problems whatsoever.

I've had knee x twice and shoulder surgery also a gallbladder removal and although your off blood thinners for 5 days it's effectiveness wears off over that time so you'll really only be at a slight risk for a day or so then your back on it.

Good luck with your surgery and don't be like me on being discharged from hospital I was pain free and got my husband to take me shopping .

I paid for it that night my knee was so painful and swollen so go home prop your leg up and do nothing till it's time for some excercise.

Thank you, I shall bear that advice in mind as I too tend to be a bit ‘gung ho ‘, I hope things have settled down for you now.

Recommend you heed the advice of your surgeon/doctor.

There have been cases of blood clots forming for those having surgery, especially knee or leg surgery. But those cases likely did not include patients that were previously on anticoagulants.

Good Luck and may you have a speedy recovery !

I’ve had several ops and been off Apixaban for 5 and 7 days.

I have had Permenent AF for the last six years and recently underwent a surgical procedure I was advised to stop taking Apixaban for three days prior and for two days after the surgery...worrying but everything was fine.

I had a hip replacement 8 weeks ago and had to come off Apixaban. I was a little concerned but I think the worse thing you can do is get stressed about it, everything was fine. They have to warn you of all the consequences but there will be thousands of surgical procedures carried out o er the country each year. Just focus on how you are going to feel in the summer when you can walk without all that pain. 😊

I think for anyone on anticoagulants, it is nerve-wracking coming off for a medical procedure; I have had to do this a number of times although I had bridging as long as I could. I just told myself, I am being monitored and if anything happens I am in the best place for very quick treatment. It may reassure you that I have never heard of anyone suffering a stroke during an op on this forum. Best of luck!

I’ve done it several times. It’s OK. They know what they are doing and I believe if they really thought we were in danger they would not proceed. Just stay calm and get your procedure done. You will feel much better.

I came off for 3 days before a hip op and it was not restarted till day after so 4 days off in total. No problems. Hope the op goes well .

Hi Tudee, I think this happens fairly often and if you stop to think about it, there must have once been a time when you had already had AF but were not yet diagnosed, and weren't taking an anti-coagulant. Hopefully you avoided a stroke then and I think that having a clot/stoke after stopping suddenly for just a couple of days would be unusual if not absolutely impossible, so try not to worry too much.

You have just read my mind, ! I was thinking of the multiple PAF episodes I had,, often seeking advice on here, and the help I received being talked down from a panic attack, pure gold. I wasn’t on anti coagulants then and my GP was loathe to start them too, yet I survived about 4 years of it. .....many thanks

I had a car accident last year and was taken off edoxaban for the first 8 days I was in hospital. I expressed great concern but I was told it was quite safe. I had to have second op at the beginning of January and stopped taking it again 3 days before. I felt more nervous because I was at home and not being checked in hospital but everything was fine.

That must have been a dreadful experience for you Liz, good to hear you are doing well, and your experience as positive regards Edoxaban, heartening to hear, thank you for sharing..

Try not to worry too much Tudee, like others have said the medics have to tell us of any risks etc. but they know what they are doing.👍

Iv had lots of surgery over the years from limbs repaired with pins/plates. Iv had a eye removed as a child because of a accident, then more surgery to have coral implant in the eye muscle.!! three PVI ablations. And on each operation I was more worried because of the what iffs than the actual surgery.!!!

I’m still here to tell the tale though.👍👍

Take it easy and best wishes. Ron.
