thyroid issues and a fibs???

Does anyone on this site know if there is a link between a fibs and a high TSH blood test? I have been hypothyroid most of my life and have to take synthroid, due to a partial thyroidectomy in my twenties. I am now 69 and have recently developed a fibs. I also might have apnea; am getting a sleep study done soon...... Are either of these conditions related to a fibs?? Thanks for any input.

I'm sure you'll get lots of replies from members who will confirm with their own anecdotes that thyroid malfunction and sleep apnoea are both closely linked to Atrial fibrillation (AF or AFib). You will find numerous threads on both subjects if you care to do a search.

Hi

Um. There is no connection between Sleep Apnea and Thyroid problems. But there is a connection between Thyroid problems ===== WHICH CAUSE AF.

My journey was STROKE - Ischaemic - Clot - RAPID an PERSISTENT AF - and Papillary Cancer.

ALL diagnosed at my stay in hospital due to stroke.

Hypo and Hyper (measured by TSH levels) can cause AF.

Normal TSH is over .5 - 4.2. Under Hyper and Hypo over.

Easier to take synthroid to decrease TSH down to normal range above.

Difficult to straighten out hyper. There is RAI treatment. But there are risks with it.

I declined RAI treatment post thyroidectomy with low risk.

I agree, and didn't say there is.

There is the usual confusion between hyper and hypo, g.p.s think too much thyroid hormone or TSH suppression causes AFib. But it seems to be linked to hyperthyroidism not hypo. Lots of other hormones are implicated too (e.g. cortisol, testosterone, insulin). Comprehensive study here academic.oup.com/cardiovasc...

I am trying to make sure my cortisol is right at the moment as stress seems to cause my Afib.

Don't have sleep apnea so can't help you on that, but sure there are links between afib and sleep apnea.

Hi

Unfortunately thyroid hypo and hyper is on the list causing AF.

My journey started with an Embolic Stroke and Rapid and Persistent AF. 4 days in a shadow on my Thyroid (carotid Arteries Scan) proved to be Papillary Cancer.

I take Synthroid and I can keep my TSH @ 1.7.

No Thyroid since Feb 2020. 12 lymph nodes removed with 2 affected. Partial Dissection of Lymph junction. LOW RISK for its return.

TSH 1.7 is easy to keep @ this level. 125mg Synthroid. A 100 and 1/2 50mg. (Allergy to 25mgs.)

Surgeon arrived at 1.50-2.50 TSH level from Mr Gary CLAYMORE who heads the USA Thyroid Centre. He does 1,000s operations per year - straight forward and correcting botched up jobs.

I guess it is more difficult having a 1/2 working thyroid.

Over my time operation Feb 2020, with meds it has changed from 1/2hr wait until 1 hour wait before food. AM best time early am.

Also I can't take soy, milk and iron for 4 hours, liquorice, greens, seaweed.

There is only 1 female in 2500 who have thyroid cancer.

Men are less.

Synthroid is worked out via your weight.

Please ask any other questions about things that bug you.

This site was better for me as I have AF and I have thyroid to deal with.

My Stroke was caused by AF which was caused by a troubled thyroid.

Remember take more Synthroid to REDUCE your TSH and less to BRING your TSH up.

I don't worry about T4 total. I am @ 21 - 24. Over 22 High Normal

My T3 is 3.9-4.2. High Normal.

I have a standing TSH, T3 and T4 Blood Test 1-2 times monthly. It's important to keep to a level.

Take care. Cheri JOY. 75. (NZ)

I believe both are related though it's under active being over medicated (ie then over active) which can be the culprit.

Don't know if it's related I was diagnosed hypothyroidism 7 years ago and developed a fib, but I don't know from when as I am asymptomatic

Yes, sleep apnea can cause AF, Yes, thyroid problems can cause AF. Even with good management of both conditions, you may still have AF.
