Bisoprolol. Notorious for shortness of breath if unlucky...and the Losarten too as I have noticed.

Hi

Although ACE and Metaprolol made me breathless, even @ 10mg Bisoprolol did not.

But it was the rapid heart rate which made me short of breath.

Given CCB Diltiazem 120mg (right dose for me) to control heart rate stopped any breathless and uncontrolled sweating.

Until AF sufferers CONTROL their heart rate under 100 tendency to be breathless prevails.

Don't blame the meds until you are still breathless when your heart rate and BP are controlled.

Asthma folks are aside. The printouts tell us that certain meds are not good for these folk.

Bisoproplol - horrible symptoms of extreme fatigue, breathlessness & weight gain because of slowing the metabolism.

Hi

No to weight gain actually lost 3kg and another 3kg.

No breathlessness when CCB added to bring down my rapid H/Rate.

Check your thyroid TSH T3 and T4 for slowing metabolism.

TSH between 1 - 4.2. Probably 2-2.5 best

T3. 3.9-4.2 Normal range

T4. 20-22. Great

I was started on bisoprolol 3 weeks ago and have been breathless. I'm looking to have it reduced or changed. I was started on 5mgs, been reduced to 3.75 which I think is still too much for me.

Hi Rainy111,

I’m on Bisoprolol - also same dose as you of 1.25. I’ve been on it 2 and a half years. Initially I did get some breathlessness, but this quickly stopped after just two or three weeks and I’ve had none since.

Although I’m not its biggest fan, I’ve experienced no other side effects apart from some tinnitus & lethargy from low heart rate, which I seem to have got used to. It’s not for everyone though and lots cannot tolerate it at all.

Bisoprolol isn’t recommended for asthma sufferers.

if you haven’t been on it long, you may still adjust.

Hi

I found Tinnitus was caused my stress. When I lost the stress I lost the tinnitus.

I take 2.5 Bisoprolol and 120mg Diltiazem

control of H/Rate and BP.

No side effects except I sleep well. If I feel tired I will have a nap due to an excursion out.

Thanks Joy,

It was most definitely the Bisoprolol with me….I’d been stressed before in my life but never tinnitus fortunately. It is actually a known side effect, there is something in beta blockers that can cause it for some people.

Hi

When I had tinnitus I actually wasn't on any meds!

Hi

I'm OK on 2.5 Bisoprolol and my Locum Dr says in 3 years on it I should get an improvement to the dilation of the. Left Atrium Dilation.

I take it for BP control and Beta Blockers damp down my Essential Tremor.

I know that Metoprolol is NOT for Asthmatics but Biso.. is OK.

I must be close to being an asthmatic as I could not take ACE meds, or Metoprolol breathless, tired, and pauses at night with little reduction of Heart Rate. Bisoprolol was slightly better from 186 to 156bpm Day.

Tinnitus is a bummer. Have a cousin who has radio on all night. She had Lupus. All questions that you might ask were repeated before she answered. What do you do if you need a hearing aid.

Take care, JOY

I was on 10mg of Bisoprolol and was very breathless. Changed to Nebivolol and now on a much lower dose, still breathless but not as bad but that's par for the course with HF

Hi

I was on Bisoprolol 10mg trying to get my Heart Rate rapid AF down.

Finally went tp private H/Specialist who introduced CCB Calcium Channel Blocker. Now controlled at 60s Day!

Diltiazem 120mg AM controls H/Rate rapid under 100.

Bisoprolol 2.5mg PM controls BP. 132/69. 60s Day 47avg bpm Night

No breathlessness anymore!

Hi

Metoprolol caused breathless, trouble on any exertion and 24-hr heart monitor read 186 bpm with 2 secs x ? at night on 47bpm,

Losartan is in the family of Metoprolol.

I can't take ACE products or Metoprolol BB Beta Blocker they are on my banned list.

Have you controlled your heart rate to under 100 at rest day and night?

I would have your heart specialist to run a 24hr heart monitor on you. This will report your BP and H/Rate 24 hours. From this you can pinpoint your med problem.

I did have rapid and persistent AF.

I too take a thyroxin - Syndroid 100 and 25mcg tablets. Take early morning before waiting 1 hour for breakfast. No milk, yoghurt and iron for 4 hours.

What is your TSH, T3 and Total T4? Have you had a total thyroidectomy? For cancer?

We need more information to help you.

You are taking a ACE Losartan Blocker and a Beta Blocker Bisoprolol.

I take now CCB Diltiazem 120mg AM for control Heart Rate

BB Bisoprolol PM for control BP

PRAXA 110mg x twice anti-co-agulant

125 (100 and 25)mg Synthroid early AM for replacement hormones. I keep to TSH 1.7, T3 3.9-4.2, T4 21-24. I get a slight hard rash with the aluminium yellow lake. (considering changing to 50s. = 2x 50s and 1/2 x 50.)

You may be in the less than TSH 0.5. hyperthyroid...

Hi there. Is this a new symptom or did you have any breathlessness before you were given any of those tablets? Also, please do mention any new symptoms to your doctor for advice.

I see you were waiting for an echocardiogram. Did you get this done and what did it show? Breathlessness can be from bisoprolol and (I think) losartan or furosemide, but also from, say lowered heart output, or from excess water in the body, called oedema.

I was on Bisoprolol for 3 months and couldn't walk more than 50m without stopping to xatch my breath and stairs were like climbing the North face of the Eiger. My pharmacist explained that there are receptors in the lungs that mimic those in the heart and sometimes, the Bisoprolol can attach to them as well.

Changed to Diltiazem and no problem, except when in AF, since.

Bisoprolol affects me, I'd hoped when they added flecanide in I could stop the bisoprolol but it didn't happen

Bisoprolol caused me to have shortness of breath. It should be taken with caution (if at all) if you have asthma or other respiratory problems. If this is the cause of your shortness of breath then maybe a change of dosage, a change in the time you take your bisoprolol or a change of medication is indicated. Your cardiologist/EP will be able to help if your GP can't with this.

I've been taking Bisoprolol for about three weeks now and to begin with I had no problems but for the last few days I've had shortness of breath when going upstairs, walking, after eating, etc.

Teresa says her breathlessness stopped after two or three weeks so I'll wait a little longer before I ask about changing to a different medication.

I'm having an echocardiogram and thorax CT scan on Friday and if things don't improve next week I'll see my GP.

I think you’re doing the right thing…you can but try. At the end of the day, we are all very different in the way we tolerate these heart drugs and most have side effects and unfortunately some aren’t nice. It’s all about quality of life and if you can tolerate the drug at the end of the day. I do hope things improve for you, Bisoprolol does actually help and my episodes reduced from monthly, to yearly. I can only put it down to the Bisoprolol.

Thank you for your encouragement.

I do think I should give it a reasonable amount of time to see how it goes, there doesn't seem much point switching from one medication to another without giving it time to properly get into my system.

I know a lot of people are worse off than I am and I try to stay positive, but I'm so fed up of not being able to do all the things I used to do without a struggle.

I'm beginning to think this is my new normal - but I won't go down without a fight!

However, when I start to feel this way I remind myself it could be the medication and I can ask to try something else. But I have to give it a reasonable amount of time first.

I’m glad you feel like this and I think you have the right attitude 😊 I even went to the GP about my breathlessness abd he found nothing wrong…I noticed it funnily enough, more, when trying to lie down. Literally a week later, it went. The lower HR takes time to get used to too and can eventually become the ‘norm’. I didn’t have any weight gain either by the way, none at all.

I hope it works for you, the same as it has for me. Good luck.
