multaq and increased heart beat

Hi everyone haven’t posted for a while,but reading the site daily. Had my third ablation in October 2023 mostly for atypical flutter,procedure wasn’t long but quite extensive judging from post procedure troponin elevations over 20,000.Placed on Multaq afterwards as I already failed all other meds and didn’t want to take amiodarone for fear of side effects.

Have been on multaq about a month and truly don’t like it,indigestion,fatigue,hot flushes,sun intolerance,just feeling sicklish.i have two questions,first,did anybody experience he same and if yes,does it get better with time?

And one more question,I used to have base rate around 70 and now it is 80-85,I believe some people mentioned in the past they had faster,but regular heartbeat like me for up to a year after ablation, guess I am just looking for some reassurance.

Hi, I cant speak to that medication myself, but as for post ablation heart rate... definitely try and be patient. I'm 5 mos post second ablation for AF, and my heart rate still isn't back to where I woukd have thought, though slowly lowering. Interestingly, I think mine was lower right after 2nd procedure than it was a couple months later! Before all my AF stuff, my resting hr was low mid 50s. Post first procedure 80s, even on meds...slowly got better, but my AF reconnected shortly after blanking period...second procedure was much easier on me overall (fewer burns and less time on the table)..but HR elevated, and still is, but overall improving. Im a gizmo freak so monitor it pretty closely as I'm trying ramp up exercise. There's the biggest difference for me...my HR shoots up way more than I'm used to during exercise, and occasionally sinus tachycardia apparently. So trying to get iver that in my brain as the new normal. Knock on wood no Afib...just has been daily ectopics especially lying down, and elevates HR compared to what I'm used. I'm off meds now. Im trying to stay curious rather than disappointed.. in 6 or 8 mos, what will it be like? Will ectopics decrease? Will HR go down even further (I've slowly reached into the low 70s bpm now). It's such a journey! But yes.. your HR sounds very normal to me and takes time...I think it can take quite a while before settling in, so you have time. Good luck!

I have been on Multaq for two years now. It did not raise my HR. Overall it has been good for me. Best of luck going forward

Have been on multaq approx 3 years, it didnt raise my heart rate or other side effects so far as i know.

I actually had tachycardia worsen with Multaq. I cannot explain why, because it should have been the opposite, but I did. I also felt really terrible on it with many of the same symptoms you listed.

I am by no means a Cardiologist or EP ..I was on Amiodarone and no side effects you might just want to give it a chance.. it did help control my Afib/Aflutter for a period of time but have added three more Beta Blockers.. I know easier said than done but try and relax as much as possible.. Stress can definitely cause high heart rates and Afib.. Hope this helps some..
