Losing weight

Has anybody noticed more afib when you're in ketosis? I can't see a cardiologist until August (Appointment made in April). I've think I'm losing weight too fast at this point.

I want to know what you’re doing to lose weight. I’d love to lose…slow or fast. 😜

About a year ago I found out I had Kidney disease and went on a kidney friendly vegan diet- lots of vegetables and fruits a few nuts, some protein supplements. I've lost about 50 pounds in a year, not too fast. My kidney function is closer to normal and my afib is also better. Today though I was in afib this morning and tried to figure out why, my weight was also down more than ususal. I haven't seen my cardiologist, since last fall, his assistant is very resistant to letting his patients make appointments, and I'm not on afib drugs yet. The key to starting a diet for me was to give up sugar, which is addictive to me; it was hard for about 3 days, now sweets have no appeal. There were always a few foods that I let myself eat when I needed to de-stress. (Crackers and grapes for me,) That's probably more than you wanted to know. Good luck, it feels very good to have stuck to it and be a more normal weight.

No, definitely NOT more than I wanted to know. I don’t think I could do the vegan aspect, but I can totally relate to anything with sugar. I lost weight several years ago by giving up “white foods”: sugar, potatoes, rices, flour, etc. Sadly, I slowly got back into that addictive way of eating. Thanks for the reminder about how much healthier I felt then. I know what I need to do now.

Yes and I read the high fat nature of the keto diet is an afib trigger. I had been a big fan before too!

Hi, thanks for the link, but I'm not on a low carb diet high fat diet- just lots of fresh stuff, beans and grains. I had read and halfway confirmed that epinephrine is involved in ketosis, that is, fat-burning, no matter why that is happening.

That’s super interesting that you are managing to get into Ketosis without high fat content (healthy fats included). To get into Ketosis I had to eat a lot of healthy fats like avocados and cut right back on carbs.

Just for the record cutting back drastically on calories has put me into a fast persistent AF which required emergency cardioversion more than once !

I think many of us have got the message that a balanced mainly plant based diet is the ideal way to go.

My very first encounter with AF was caused by a fast weight loss aided by the now banned diet pill Adifax. Amiodarone as an outpatient got me back into NSR within 2 weeks although the cardiologist wanted me admitted for dccv which I refused at that time.

Very sorry to hear that, good luck. My ex-husband had that but an ablation cured it for now. (Same as a log of people on the site). He was barely aware of it at first. Also, thanks for posting, ( MummyLuv too ) it kind of confirms my own experience with a fib and with diet, though its still paroxysmal for me and less frequent since the weight loss.

Could not do keto diet due to heart palps. Lost weight but not worth the heart issues I had.

I've read that any type of diet where one food group is emphasized at the expense of another is bound to cause a bad reaction. Can you possibly tone it down a bit? Slower weight loss is healthier by far, and longer lasting too.

I also lost too much weight but gained some back by balancing my diet. I was cutting much magnesium and potassium rich food to help with my IBS. That got me back into frequent afib. So I went back to ketosis with low foodmap vegetable and fruits. Now by eating about 10 half walnuts, 10 half pecans, spinach, kale and avocadoes, mashed carrots, I got some weight back and my afib episodes are gone. I hope it helps you.
