I haven’t put on any weight at all in Bisoprolol. I do take a low dose however, of 1.25 mg.
I think it does depend on how tired it makes you feel. I couldn’t tolerate 2.5 mg, but I wasn’t on it long enough for it to take real effect, so I may have eventually put on weight with that dose.
I did do a quick Google on your other medication for arthritis - and that revealed that it can also lead to weight gain for some people.
Oh yes and very difficult to lose the weight after stopping, it slows your metabolism so usual strategies seem to have little effect. Best approach I found was IF - Intermittent Fasting as per Dr Mosley’s Book.
Age also means much more difficult to lose weight.
Yes - about 4-5lbs / 2 kg. I think it arises from the lower activity as much as anything, but there's some evidence of a slowing of the metabolism from the beta-blocker drugs.
I am reducing my meal portions to deal with my additional weight since going from 1.25mg to 2.5mg a day! It seems to be doing the trick.
My wife's aunt ran a successful diet club for many years and her mantra was not to change what you eat, just change the amount you eat. She claimed all other diets were bound, eventually, to fail. That's what I'm doing, and it is slowly but surely doing the trick - as it must. My weakness is for puddings and a piece of chocolate in the evenings. I'm cutting down on those more than other things.
I've lost weight, gained weight and stayed the same weight at different times since starting on bisoprolol 5 years ago! If I stick to a diet of protein, healthy fats and mostly above ground veggies, I can lose weight or stay the same, but if I eat a higher carbohydrate diet, and particularly processed foods, I quickly gain weight. I don't know whether being on biso makes a difference to this, or whether it's just that I have insulin resistance anyway that means I don't process high carb foods well.
There's a GP surgery in Essex which has a useful website available to the public about ways of eating to lose weight and put diabetes and pre-diabetes into remission, with no need for medication. They have various meal plans, for ideas. I've found their info really useful. You can google for it - Freshwell Low Carb Project.
Yes I’m afraid I have gained weight . I have also slowed down .I used to have much more energy and find my legs ache when walking up even the slightest of slopes.
Thanks for that. It seems that’s our collective experience. I think I will try a fasting based diet to see what happens and see if I can lose something.
Yes. It’s a known side effect, although it’s normally 3/4 lbs in the first few months before stabilising. Worse, I’ve found any gain is the absolute devil to shift. Personally I sometimes wonder if the benefits it affords aren’t offset by the risks from the excess weight.
Thanks for that. I’m beginning to feel the same. If it’s all worth it. I’ve aggravated my knee health with the weight gain - it’s all a vicious circle.
Hi. Have similar problem with weight gain. I'm on a high dose of Bisoprolol 10mg per day for the last 12 years. Don't know if this is caused by the meds or is a viscous circle, in that it makes you tired, so you don't exercise, which puts strain on my arthritic knees leading to pain, so you don't exercise. Round we go on the hamster wheel and adding cream on my cornflakes probably doesn't help either.
Same here. I’m prescribed 5 mg daily but only take 2.5.
I couldn’t tolerate the full dose as was getting a heart rate of low 50s which - frightened me as did my slow breathing whilst asleep which scared my partner.
Now there are times when i just lay in bed all day especially having taken my methotrexate for arthritis.
I feel like going on a beach holiday and stopping all the meds. It feels they’ve made me into a limping overweight guy .
