Met with consultant 4 weeks ago …..was told I as back in sinus rhythm and no need for the planned ablation (2nd one) to go ahead .

Two days ago had appointments come through post for a pre op on the 4 th and then for ablation on the 7th! Rang to double check and am told , yes you are down for an ablation !!????

Has anyone else had ablation done whilst in Sinus ? Is this a “ normal” occurrence? Would it be to make the chances of going back into AF much reduced ? Any ideas anyone ? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Yes had 2 ablations when in NSR because my AF was Paroxysmal ie comes & goes.

I don’t quite understand your consultant’s comment? Was that with an EP? No wonder you are confused.

Many people will go into ablation in NSR.

It doesn’t matter whether or not you are in AF but it matters more if you want an ablation?

And yes, the hope is that it will either stop AF returning completely or at least reduce the AF burden.

Has it been explained to you clearly? Are you aware of what it entails?

Please ask any questions here or go to the AFA Patient information centre where there is a lot of information about various treatment options.

Best wishes CD

All my ablations were carried out whilst I was in sinus rhythm.

However I wonder why in your consultation he said no need and now it is planned to go ahead.

I see no problem with you asking for a full explanation prior to going into hospital for another ablation.

I fear that there may be confusion between cardioversion with ablation as with the former there is no need if you are in normal sinus rhythm (NSR) and the latter it makes no difference. I suspect it is to this that the consultant was referring.

Electophysiologists have clever ways of stimulating AF so that they know from where it is coming if using RFand with cryo they just ablate in the mouths of the four pulmonary veins.

Thanks folks ….I did speak to his secretary who dbl checked for me ……..I am happy to go ahead as my previous ablation kept me in rhythm for over a year. It was just disconcerting that he had said they weren’t going to do it . Think I ma6 follow up with another phone call as I have a way to travel to attend these appointments at Papworth.

What Bob said makes sense. I was down for a cardioversion but it never went ahead. They won't do that while you are in sinus rhythm as it can't achieve anything. With af, if I recall, doesn't the EP stimulate the heart to cause afib to happen during the procedure to show where the ablation is needed?

So long as you have checked that it is right to go ahead with the ablation with your consultant,

I had the opposite happen done years ago when I had gone through the pre op the Friday before had meds delivered to use night before and morning of the operation on the Monday - operation was on Wednesday and Tuesday morning had letter from consultant saying it had been cancelled over a week before! Obviously the internal mail had not worked as well as external mail or someone had not acted on the instruction to cancel! Waste of medication and time unfortunately.
