I had my annual liver function test and again have raised alk phos level. I had slightly raised level a couple of years back (150) and was prescribed Ad-cal. My latest blood test shows it raised further to 170 and will be tested again in 3 months.
Has anyone else had this type of progression and should I have fasted before the blood test? Thanks folks

They generally don't worry unless the numbers are into the 1000s. I've had numerous scans and a liver biopsy but nothing found so they have decided it's just normal for me.
Looks like trend up just outside of upper limits. There's all kind of teas and supplements that help Liver and enzymes. Milk thistle been used for centuries. I think turmeric works well. However, there may be interaction with blood thinners, so check.
Thank you - I had noted that milk thistle, some supplements and also coffee (!!) improve liver function. It will be interesting to see the result in three months' time - meantime I will continue to eat healthily and research.
My GP told me that many of these markers just go up ( or down) naturally as we age and the norms are averages for the population as a whole. My ESR was always above the norm but he said he was not worried by it - he would have been if I had been 20. I'm not sure I found that totally reassuring but I worry less about it.
On diagnosis of AF 4 years ago, I had a full blood test that included Liver function. It was highlighted that I had several slightly elevated figures, notably GGT at 217 instead of a healthy max of 61. My ALT (58, normal max 50) and APT (alkphos 120, normal max 129) were also raised towards the maximum. This seemed related to the fact that I was drinking a little too much alcohol at this time. I stopped drinking and my levels started to fall. It took a year to fall to around 100 and then stayed at that for another year, six months of which I was taking Amiodarone. Since then it has continued to fall slightly and has now settled at around 70 even though I am drinking alcohol again (not to the same extent as four years ago). My ALT is now around 25 and APT still at 110.
My GP was never particularly concerned about these levels and has decided that my recently due annual test can be extended to 18 months. The view is that my high level for GGT is just normal for me.
Thank you - everyone is saying more or less the same thing - we each have our own 'norms'. I did wonder about diet affecting some readings but, apart from loving cheese too much, nothing springs to mind. Last time my reading was up my GP did a bone profile test which was OK: this time it seems to be wait and see.
