My beautiful mother (my heart) is 84 years old, and has been recently placed on anticoagulant, Eliquis, which she is not doing very well with, regarding side effects of massive diarrhea and bouts of UTI. She was previously prescribed Xarelto, which raised her Blood pressure above 200 Systolic and caused severe joint pain. I have researched information about other blood thinners and noticed that Pradaxa has many side effects as well. My question is about Edoxaban (Savaysa). It seems it does not have any gastrointestinal side effects, such as diarrhea, although I believe I found a mention of a few having stomach pain. If you would please share your thoughts and experience regarding this prescription drug. Thank you very much.

I've just started on it , 7 days ago. I think if anything a mild stomach upset but possibly not even that as I have stomach issues anyway and I know for a fact my beta blockers have caused problems. In my opinion Edoxaban is fine
Your mother's symptoms are not any of the usual or rare side effects of eliquis. Most people here have no side effects at all.
I have found it difficult to tell what causes what and it is easy to blame certain meds. I started to take Magnesium tablets and after a few days I stopped because I thought it was giving me headaches. Started taking it again last month with no side effects at all.
Also credit is given for doing certain things which may not have any connection at all.
Thank you very much for your response dear Physalis and dear tabletphobic. A little background on my mother. My mom does not take any prescription drugs other than Eliquis, which began on Sunday, 4/25/21. She takes OTC vitamins only. The following information is from drugs.com,. Regarding Diarrhea.
3. Downsides Eliquis
If you are between the ages of 18 and 60, take no other medication or have no other medical conditions, side effects you are more likely to experience include:
• Minor bleeding, nausea, anemia, and hemorrhage are the most common side effects.
Gastrointestinal side effects such as constipation, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain may also occur.
• Severe bleeding is uncommon; however, the risk is increased in ADVERTISEMET
In future please look at the BNF website for reliable advice re meds as sites such as drugs.com seem very alarmist. It may be your mother is on too high a dose - see NHS website for prescribing advice. I suggest she stops the vitamins and tries Eliquis (Apixaban) again. If symptoms continue I would want her to have a gastrointestinal examination to rule out problems which may have been revealed by the anticoagulant s. There was one person on this site who was intolerant to all DOACs and ended up on warfarin which can be a pita so worth trying Apixaban again. Best wishes 💜
If Blain's mother has been taking OTC vits with no bad consequences then why advise her to stop taking them? Adverse effects of all drugs always lag behind those cited in the manufacturer's product information which are usually those encountered in the clinical trials. It can take many years of post marketing for enough evidence to come to light especially as reporting of side effects is low. Part of the problem is that if a side effect not listed in the manufacturer's product info is reported to the doctor the patient is often told "x drug does not cause that side effect " and no report is made to the relevant authorities. This is a major problem for Pharmacovigilamce and leads to drugs like Vioxx and Mediator being on the market for years damaging and even killing people. Also BNF website is not available to those living outside the UK.
The quote refers to people between the age of 16 and 60 who take no other medication, so the age range is wrong and it may be a reaction to the mix with vitamins if too high a dose of either is taken. Just seemed worth a try temporarily.
Hi Blain..... I was on Edoxaban when I was first diagnosed with PAF & it seemed to give me gastric issues, so was changed to Apixaban (Eliquis) & so far this has been ok for me.Good luck & all the best !!
Thank you very much ramblerbaz3. It seems these blood thinners have different side effects on different people for unknown reasons. Mom has had bouts of severe diarrhea and UTI since Eliquis was prescribed.
I had foot surgery in 2019 and paused my Riveroxaban for the procedure. I started back on it and after 8 weeks could drive again. Immediately, and very suddenly I had a bleed behind my kneecap. My anticoagulant was changed to Elequis, but I found it caused indigestion. My electro-cardiologist changed it to Edoxaban because he said that has less side effects regarding digestion. After a course of Lanzaprazole( for indigestion) I found that Edoxaban is fine for me. I only take 30mgs daily as I weigh under 60 kgs. I hope this helps a bit.
I had same problems and changed to Edoxaban 2 years ago with no noticable gastric problems. I have IBS but it's so random that it can't be the edoxaban x
Hi I’ve been on Edoxaban for a year previously on warfarin which did not agree with me. However Edoxaban does the job without to many side effects.I know it’s not for everyone but the one thing I have been getting since taking this is bruises which I have learned to live with.
Thank you very much to all for your comments and feedback. We have decided to give Edoxaban (Savaysa) a try. Mom has had daily bouts of diarrhea and stomach ache ever since Eliquis was prescribed (different people, different experience). The doctor informed us that regarding transition from Eliquis to Edoxaban (Savaysa), besides up to date blood samples regarding kidney and liver enzyme levels, mom would need to recieve injections of lovenox for 5 consecutive days. I cannot find any information regarding the lovenox injection for transition from Eliquis. If anyone has experienced this part of the transition or has any information, please share.Thank you very much everyone.
Edoxaban quite neutral for me in terms of side effects just dry scalp and blood 'blisters' on torso.Stopped taking for 12 months and dry scalp went. No stomach issues. Calcium channel blockers seem to be the culprit for me with stomach pain and now only use them with bisoprolol every other day to manage blood pressure. Reading the posts on hawthorn I shall visit the garden hedge and pick/infuse some berries.
