Post SVT ablation consuming alcohol

Hi! I’m a 21 yr old who 3 weeks ago had an SVT ablation. I’m on metoprolol 25 mg twice daily to regulate my heart rate for the foreseeable future, will probably be cutting those in half to ween off them soon, but my birthday is at the end of August and I really want to be able to enjoy a few drinks. Was wondering if anyone had any experience with this? Alcohol was never a trigger before my ablation.

I forgot to add that I was put on the metoprolol because I was having severe palpitations and fluttering about a week after the procedure (that never happened before the procedure). The medication seems to have helped that a lot so far. I also was curious, my anxiety and depression have been at an all time high. I’m attributing this to the procedure because I’ve been extremely anxious since then since it didn’t all go as planned (but that’s life), was wondering if anyone who’s had this done has felt the same? I think a big part of it for me is because I’m so young and probably impatient and I’m not able to do things that 21 year olds are supposed to do and probably won’t be able to for a few months.

Oh heck you’re so young I’m not surprised this has pulled the rug from under you . . Its very early days with your ablation, it’s easy to get disheartened and the stress can affect things, yet stopping worrying is darn hard I know.

As for alcohol, I’d say not yet, you’d prob not e joy it anyway as you’d be worried about it all the time. I understand u wanting to, I was sad when told not to drink although now I can tolerate a glass or two.. Look at this as a “maybe” in the future. You may find you can have a drink as time goes on...it affects a lot of folk here but not all.....wait till the heart is healed. Meanwhile rest and don’t push your body.

Im 21 and getting this procedure done next week. How did it not go as planned and are you feeling any better now?

It’s tough having this Mongral condition at any age especially when your 21, but if I’m honest I wouldn’t touch a drop until you fully healed

Thank you for your response! You’re right, it definitely just sucks a lot but my health is a lot more important.

Exactly mate fully recover first than see if you can than have a drink or two, I suffer with terrible anxiety and any setback on my health will depress me even further

My advice would be not to take chances. However, I am extra cautious about everything. Try alcohol free. We use Freixenet alcohol free fizz, you can get white and rose but we find the rose too sweet. Always check for sulphites and artificial sweetners too as these seem to affect a lot of people with AF

What a nuisance! I've just had an ablation and EP suggested holding off alcohol for three months.

On the plus side at least you won't have a hangover from hell the next day 🤮🤮🤮

I take the same dose, and 29/8 is my birthday.... don’t be in a hurry to stop Metoprolol, just listen to your Dr. It’s not worth risking your health for the sake of a few beers....

Hi, Metoprolol for 18 years, together with Flecainide & blood thinner Apixaban. I was having paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, but following an ablation it very rarely occurs (Have had none for nearly 2 years) on these medications.

80th birthday coming up, still playing table tennis and enjoy a hike. Best wishes.

I had an ablation for A-Flutter almost two years ago. It has been very successful. But, post procedure another cardiologist had me on Pradaxa (2 per day,) Metropolol & Crestor- all as preventative. I unilaterally stopped taking all medication because I have not had any problems. I should say, I have not felt any atrial issues except the one time I drank too much. I immediately took a Metropolol. But, as soon as return to Florida, I going to see the electro- cardiologist who did the procedure & seek his advise as to medication.

Yep. Probably too soon after the ablation for alcohol. Secondly, alcohol and metoprolol would only decrease you heart rate more which could lead to low blood pressure, tiredness and possibly dizziness. Alcohol can also enhance anxiety since it is a depressant. Right now it is most important to take care of yourself in order to have a better future outcome for your health.
