The joys of anticoagulation hoho

I have found that the problem with anticoagulants is not that a clot won’t form but it is very delicate and friable. Saga warning!

As my daughter is between homes her mountain bike is parked in our seriously overstuffed garage. On my way back from adding another item to the heap I caught my shin on the evil little spikes on a pedal which ripped into my leg through my linen trousers. Very painful but being brought up to be stoic I gave it a good wash and as it wasn’t pouring blood I carried on with my busy day. I suddenly realised my leg felt wet and realised I was gently trickling blood. Cleaned my leg around cut - repeat, all afternoon. I couldn’t go to the surgery because my husband was out doing something essential so ended up at Morrison’s Pharmacy buying dressings in the evening. The next morning I needed a shower, blood showing through dressing - what to do? Called surgery who booked Nurse Jody to call me back, advised soak dressing off and see what happens. Of course scab came off but I could see I had a tiny ‘volcano’ bubbling up from the deepest hole. Back to Jody, physical exam this time, nice padded dressing to wear at night and for showering, otherwise leave to air.

AF this morning, can’t think why 🤔

Sorry to hear you are back in afib Buffafly. Fingers crossed it passes quickly for you.

As for the anticoagulants and bleeding. For me personally I find a cut takes around 24 hours to stop bleeding completely - maybe a little more at times. Just take care and make sure you don't knock it again by accident in the next few days.

Oh no Buffafly 😕 What a pain all round- one of those momentary actions you just wish you could undo. And AF to crown it all... Hoping & praying you’re back in NSR soon, and that you heal up well too. Sending love, J xx

The puzzling thing is how exactly it happened! Now the inflammation has gone down a bit I can see that I have a ‘bite pattern’ on my leg from the teeth but how one managed to rip my leg through my trousers I can’t work out. AF stopped after 12 hours thank goodness. But I think we would have thoroughly failed a Health and Safety inspection. The joke is we have just let out a house and had to make alterations to meet H&S standards but frankly our own garden and garage are death traps!

It pays to de-clutter and look at things that could be potentially dangerous. I am always doing that as I have fell so many time in days gone by I will not fall again. I even have to put my washing basket on my four wheel walker to go and hang out the washing otherwise when I look up for the line I go dizzy and used to worry about overbalancing. Oh! the joys of AF.

Unfortunately my husband is a hoarder so we have fruitless conversations about that quite frequently 😬 I’m glad you are looking after yourself and hope the ablation helps 💜

I haven`t come across a male that doesn't hoard! I got around this as I like a neat environment, everything that was his was piled in one corners usually by `his chair` or put in one draw his idea of filing . Now he has passed I have my son who is the same. I do not go in his bedroom, and place his clean clothes etc by his door.

I don`t go in our shed anymore or the garage I just leave everything and eventually he tidies. This approach has always worked over the years as I came to the conclusion that a male brain does not work the same as a female one. Who knows who is right, we are all different!

My daughter is on Apixaban. As she was closing their heavy folding doors between house and garden she caught the back of her heel - just where the top of a shoe would end. The pain was such that she passed out. Her heel bled - and bled - and bled. Not huge amounts, but like you, a steady trickle. The surgery said that because of its location the injury couldn't be stitched so she has worn pads too. It is finally dry a week later.

Please be careful that your open wound stays clean when you don't have a dressing on it. And thank goodness your heart has calmed down.

When discussions fail, the best way to deal with a hoarder (my husband and my son-in-law both are) is to make secret trips to the tip. Believe me, from one who knows, he will never ever notice!

Sorry to read about this but it could be useful for me for the future. Hope everything is well now.

Still healing very slowly, so my advice for future would be get medical advice even if you think you’ll look like a wuss! I think I should have had a washout and stitches 🤕 Problem is circulation in lower leg not the best. I’ll be pleased if it’s a dire warning to others though 💜
