Supplements requiring care

There are some fellow gym bunnies here who may want to note my experience. I take blood pressure medication and decided to take citrulline malate to a) drop my blood pressure and b) improve my training on a rowing machine. Instead I ended up in A&E with a temperature of 33 degrees, blood pressure and heart rate on the floor to the extent they had great difficulty getting a blood sample. My blood had high lactate as though I'd been training anaerobically. Southmead NHS hospital were great as always, with great follow up from the GP Practice. The other supplement to be careful with is carnosine as it will drop the blood pressure across your lungs.

Thank you for advising us about these two supplements. Hope you're all good now.

Thanks for your good wishes. The GP has confirmed that citrulline malate was the cause and, I'm back to normal.

This week I heard that my bowel cancer screening test was positive, so back to the hospital on Thursday. At least if I have surgery it could be a job lot with my prostate.

I am so very sorry to hear that, John – and your ability to be humorous about it is amazing. Good luck with the appointment on Thursday and all good wishes to you.

Thank you for your good wishes. I know women who've had breast cancer, a collegue who had prostate cancer; they are still here. When I had pulmonary toxicity, the usual outcome in the USA was death or a lung transplant. I remember a nervous young doctor telling my wife and I that as I had survived, it was likely that I would be in a wheel chair and requiring oxygen. About six months later I was puffing and panting climbing up the Rumps near Padstow. Most weeks I walk 5 to 8 miles with the walking group. My SpO2 is 98% to 100% and, as the sun is shining, I'll be doing a 3km to 5km on the rowing machine in the sun this afternoon. There is little that we can change so there is everything to be positive about.

That’s a marvellous outlook to have, John – and one that I will now endeavour to keep in mind whenever I get anxious 😊

Back in the day I used to watch the TV series Kung Fu. The. lead character once said; "when did worrying about tomorrow ever change anything?" Take the action that you can, the rest will be what it will be.

That is so true, John. Similarily, I once received a card which had the words - ‘Do not anticipate the changes and chances of life; rather, be at peace and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations’. Good luck with your appointment tomorrow.
