Can a tummy bug with being sick bring on PAF or is it anxiety slipping in .Surgery nurse had advised me to stay off work for these three shifts as one unit in lock down due to residents having bug She says it's in best interest to ensure I'm over my bout as I'm still reducing my steroids and have just reduce by 1mg on Friday I am at risk of infections whilst still on them

I think the stress of being sick can trigger a fib sometimes. It is hard to say re anxiety. Steroids can amp up anxiety. Can you feel if your pulse is regular? Sorry to hear you are not feeling well💜

Pulse is about 68 at minute

Thats good. Maybe just try and relax, stay hydrated if you can.

Works every time for me!! Any tummy bugs, sickness etc always triggers my AF. If I’m really sick (vomiting) the AF will kick off within minutes!!

Pain ain't it I'm not even sure what to take for it Or what to eat and drink

I think the main thing is to try to keep hydrated with water and rehydration drinks and not worry too much about solid food until it all settles down.

Yer I have had bottled water and black decaffeinated tea Just had a banana and some bread today

in reply toTako2009

Yep, stimulating the vagus nerve with vomiting does that to me. Dehydration can also trigger A Fib, so make sure to stay hydrated.

Thankfully, I have not had any issues with vomiting in years. I hope you feel better soon.

I haven't either till the other day Feeling little better now though Week off work as advised by practise nurse at docs

Vonnie, I'm sure you know that you have to stay off work for a clear period of 48hrs after your last period of upset stomach, before returning to work

Doing anything strenuous, that you don't normally do could bring on an attack of AF for anyone and that includes being sick and extreme stress. My advice is relax at home for a few days and make sure you get clear of this bug. Don't feel guilty about not going in to work while you are poorly and I hope you are better soon.

Yes, I know how guilty they can make you feel! I hope your bosses are going to pay you your full wage while you are off work with a bug you caught there? We always did.

Up and down, on and off, you know how it is. Husband went away to USA for his yearly family visit and while he was there his younger brother passed away suddenly - so sad and a massive shock for the family. Apart from that, all is well.

How are you apart from the nasty bug? Must catch up with you properly soon xx

This happened to me when I had sickness bug. I firmly believe it was because I was less hydrated than normal. However ill I feel in future I am going to ensure I keep my fluid intake up.

Best wishes

Hi, I had a horrible bug a few months ago, so bad that I couldn’t keep anything down. I became so dehydrated that my potassium level was so bad, I had to get an intravenous drip in hospital, it all brought on an episode. Low potassium is a well-known cause of AFib, even happens to people with no history of AFib who end up in the emergency department. Keep eating the bananas, and even better, drink loads of coconut water. Get well soon.

Vonnieruth profile image
Vonnieruth in reply todexter8479

Oh is coconut water good then I have seen it but never tried it

dexter8479 profile image
dexter8479 in reply toVonnieruth

It’s good because you get the hydration as well as the potassium. It’s an easy way to get both into your system quickly. It’s a bit of an acquired taste, luckily I love the taste of coconut! It’s pretty bland, tbh, but if you don’t like it, it’s one of those things you can just knock back in one go, like medicines 😉 I hate bananas, alas.

Hi Vonnie :-) just caught up with this, pleased to hear you are feeling better today.

I have concluded that anything like a virus that puts an extra strain on the immune sysem can have an effect on P-AF , 'an extra straw for the camels back ' you might say. I started with a respiratory virus at the weekend and went into AF on Monday for 10 hours and I am still getting little runs of rapid irregularity when I cough a lot. This has happened before when I have had chest infections .

I think it is really imprtant to try not to add to the burden by getting stressed and to try to stay calm .

It sounds as thought all is going well at work :-) and I am really pleased for you . Stay well...

Thanks Doodle Hope your better real soon Don't think people at work understand what different illnesses can do to PAF

For me having stomach bug has definitely brought on AF in the past and even being very ill with bronchitis that ended up going into pneumonia did the same. It seems stress on my body just isn’t good for my AF.

Although yesterday I turned my ankle and ended up with lots of pain. Was concerned it would trigger AF, but so far so good. So there’s always hope.

It was helpful to see your post as keeps me from feeling alone in such events. This forum is such a blessing!

Vonnieruth profile image
Vonnieruth in reply toTux18

It surely is I don't know what I would have done without it when I was first diagnosed

Fatigue can certainly bring on PAF and as this is a possible accompaniment of a tummy bug I would have thought the answer is yes.

I'm sorry you're feeling so rough. I find that either sickness or diarrhoea brings a fib on instantly. I usually end up going to bed with rehydration drinks. They definitely help. Hope you feel better soon.

Vonnieruth in reply toFlossie72

Thank you Little better today Just need to stay away from work till fully fit surgery nurse said due to being on steroid reduction and it causing higher risk of picking up infections

Glad to hear today is a little better. Take good care💜

I'm not sure about a tummy bug, but I know last Christmas I caught a flu virus from my daughter-in-law's Dad and ended up in A & E with tachycardic AFib. I would have thought that any virus could set things off. Better to be safe than sorry and keep away. Stay well

After my ablation in July of 2016 l was free of afib until May of 2017. I went to the ER because of an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. They gave me the steroid prednisone to take home with me. Two days after taking it I went into afib for about 2-1/2 hours. I looked it up and sure enough, prednisone can induced afib. The ER doctor knew my history and should have at least warned me about the possibility of afib, or given an alternative drug. So please just be careful with the steroids.
