Mess and tummy bugs

Hi sorry if this has been asked before. I’m on the usual meds beta blockers, statins and Pradaxa. How does everyone cope if you have sickness and diarrhoea? Is it pointless taking the meds , stop taking till the bug passes? I’m not sure what to do? Thankyou

I'm not a medic, but I would say keep taking the meds, particularly the Pradaxa. Drink plenty of fluids and ring your anticoagulant nurse for advice. If you stop the meds, there is no chance they can work, continue them and they might.

The statin does not matter right now. The Pradaxa does and the betablocker might.

I agree. Keep taking the blood thinner in particular. Keep hydrated. Maybe take dioralyte prescription free from pharmacy You have to keep your electrolytes up.

My view is keep taking. They may stay down long enough for some to be absorbed. If you don't take them there is no chance as Badger said.

Thanks Bob. Not fancying the Pradaxa if it makes its way up. It can be really nasty on the way down sometimes. Thanks, carry on rattling!😂

Definitely take as normal as some or most will leave the stomach fairly quickly - I read somewhere within an hour or so (do check that as my memory may be wrong).

Hi Valdoot :-) I had the winter sickness bug a few weeks ago and spent a night on the bathroom floor wrapped in a blanket. I had taken my Apixaban 2 hours before I started being ill, the beta blockers for rate control 7 hours before. I was really worried the anti coagulation might not be working. I took the next dose when it was due but don't know if it stayed with me. I just kept taking my medication at the usual time and was ok.

It is a worry but at least we don't usually get that kind of illness very often.

Hope you are better soon.

Thanks

I contracted Norovirus on a cruise ship last year( horrific) but continued taking all 7 of my different meds...including warfarin. I had my Coaguchek test machine to monitor my warfarin with me so could make minor adjustment to dose. My reasoning is that some of the drugs will be absorbed. Take lots of water.

Sandra

PS felt so dreadful I didn't really care what happened !!

Try taking with Dioralyte or similar which is more likely to stay down than water, or else (flat) ginger ale or 7Up (Doc's advice).

My only problem with Pradaxa is that it invariably causes heartburn unless I take it with food. I have skipped many doses to no ill effect, but my afib episodes are very infrequent, i.e. approximately once every 6-8 months. I would not recommend skipping any doses if your episodes are frequent.
