I’m on metoprolol and I’m wondering can I take a multi-vitamin and fish oil along with my metoprolol? I read somewhere that fish oil lowers blood pressure so I don’t want it to drop it more than metoprolol already does
TIA

You can take them with your meds. You need to ask your doc about fish oil if you take an anticoagulant. My doc says it is fine but not all docs do.
I take a multivitamin and fish oil (and a couple of other supplements including magnesium). I have spoken with a prominent Australian pharmacist and master herbalist, as well as my own pharmacist and doctors. I’ve read about a few contradictions with medication (I’m on Atenolol, Digoxin and Rivaroxiban) and they have all said it’s fine to be taking it - in fact it is all stuff that was recommended by one or the other of them. Always worth checking with your own medical team though as we all have our own issues..
I received conflicting advice with Omega 3 and in the meantime have just continued taking it. I am on warfarin, bisoprolol and flecainide as a PIP.
I take a lot of supplements, including fish oils with Apixaban. I’ve not had any problems and our GP practice did a clinical study of people taking fish oils.
The ones particularly helpful for AF = COQ10, especially if you take statins, Magnesium - if you can tolerate it, L-Cartinine, Vitamin C but you could be wasting your money as absorption for VitC is notoriously low although there is some research on Liposomal VitC is better absorbed. I also take D-Ribose - but that is a one to be careful about if you are about to have surgery or a diabetic.
Personally I stay away from multivitamins and take advice from nutritionist and testing. Just waiting for my D3 results to come back to see if I need to supplement there.
My rule of thumb is try to get all your micro and macro nutritents from foods - only supplement if you are experiencing difficulties known to come from a deficiency eg:- low Magnesium is known to cause muscle cramps, difficulty sleeping, and arrythmia. Work first on diet and absorption - ie:- sorting out your gut to ensure you absorb what you are taking in and ensure what you are eating is good, nutrient dense, wide range of foods.
If you can find a doctor to help you monitor your bloods - know your numbers. I (& my GP is very good on this) have to watch my Iron levels and then work out - am I not absorbing from food, not making it or not storing it?
The more investigate supplementation the more I am learning that it is MUCH more than just taking a multi-vitamin which may or may not help you.
For really good general advice on nutrition - I’ve found these sites particularly useful and well researched. I use Dr Rupy’s recipes all the time.
I like to take my metoprolol at 8am but I’m never hungry at that time. Can I just have something small like a banana or yogurt? Or does it have to be a meal
I dont have a fill meal, usually a protein bar.
Someone once threw a bottle of cod liver oil capsules at me. Luckily my injuries were super-fish-oil.
