Another experience proving we are all different

I had mentioned in a couple of my answers to posts in the group that I had been episode free for over a year, and suddenly I had two back to back episodes of AF. i didn’t remember doing anything different and in fact did not have any alcohol that day or for several days so not drinking anything can’t be the culprit.

I had been listening to a podcast where they kept talking about how important fish oils are in our diet and I temporarily forgot that whenever I take a fish oil supplement it doesn’t agree with me.

I have tried a newer fish oil supplement made from sea weed oil which is supposed to be better and less contaminated and yadda yadda.

I took 1 capsule which actually forgot about and it was later that day I had a AF episode and 1 the next day as well, in my sleep which finally cleared up after about 8 hours.

Two days after that after much thought I remembered I had taken the fish supplement.

I did a research and found an article at Cleveland Clinic and a study regarding oils. Three groups, fish oil, corn oil, and mineral oil. Turns out worst outcomes for these oils and fish oil did nothing for people with AF. Bottom line: people with AF stay away from fish oil.

Experiment with your diet and supplements and muscle test if you know how.

I have always known not to take fish oil supplements because I have AF. Can't remember why now but then I've had AF for 19 years.

Good that you have brought this subject up to remind members.

I take a fish oil capsule daily it has no effect on my AF whatsoever, different things affect different people, so you have to learn your own personal triggers.

Me too . Taken it for decades . What I find disagrees with my body is stopping and starting things, I always buy my supplements from the same supplier . Keep everything as level and steady as possible, not too much of anything. Don’t poke the beast with a stick

I’ve been taking a good quality omega 3 for years with high amounts of EPA & DHA I thought they were benifcial for heart health, fighting inflammation and brain support !!

I think I’ll ask for clarification from my nutritionist .

I always say do your homework. We are all different and thinks affect us differently. the supplements I take are good quality I would have to say better than good quality. I have no problem with eating Salmon, in fact had some last night. Again it speaks to how we are all different.

I’m the same - fish oil worked wonders for joint pain years back - I tried it a couple of times since start of heart stuff - first time I was naive - second time I simple forgot what that earlier experience had taught me ….still here & 🤞🏻I’ve learnt the lesson (glad of the reminder though)

I too have taken cod liver oil capsules for many years without any effect on my AF. Just goes to show how different we all are.

I have always understood that fish is one of the most healthy of foods, but I always shy away from artificial "nutraceuticals" since there can be no way our bodies have evolved for them to be healthy. If they work, they work as a ny other drug works, rather than as anything "natural". The worry with them is that they are generally untested and cannot be standardised since the active ingredient is often unknown.

Flaxseed is rich in ALA, a type of omega-3 fatty acid that may offer numerous benefits for heart health.

There are many scientific papers warning for the link between Omega3 supplements and Afib. Here are two of them:

both interesting articles. In my case I don't think my triglycerides are elevated so there is that. If they are it is only slightly.

It's another one of those funny ones isn't it.Omega 3 supplements can increase the risk of developing or triggering aFib in many sufferers but oily fish in the diet can be beneficial. Just 1g of Omega 3 , or a supplement each day caused an increased aFib risk in tests.

Much like when talking about using Turmeric or CoQ10 on medications for blood thinning or anticlotting.

Avoid the supplements but you can choose your timing and have them in your diet.

Are you taking fish oil along with a blood thinner for your AF?

Peacefulneedshelp profile image
Peacefulneedshelp in reply toCalypso76

No I am not taking either as my AF is so sporadic that only aspirin has been recommended for now.

From what you mentioned, I'm wondering if eating fish regularly and I mean like everyday would have the same effect as using omega 3 supplements.

That is questionable but as I mentioned I hadn’t taken any fish oil for over a year. As I said it’s a mystery. It also could be that a fish oil supplement doesn’t really contain all the constituents that eating a piece of salmon or other oils fish would. I can eat fish with no problem but 1 fish oil capsule creates AFib in a few hours and another episode the next day. Go figure.

That is a great article. What I find interesting is that I do purchase from a good source and they changed the formulation to seaweed oil, because the oceans are being fished out. However, not everything is good for everybody. As stated so many times on this forum we are all different. I had been taking a fish oil supplement for years and it was only about a year ago that I started questioning taking it. I have a friend that is a holistic dr and she used muscle testing on me, better known as kinesiology, and my body did not want any brand of fish oil. She sells only the best supplements. I now have to wonder if fish oil was an issue for me for years and I didn’t know it. I have learned to self muscle test and I test everything I take. It changes from day to day.

Thank you for posting that article.
