Has anyone experienced chronic issues with mucus in the throat from taking metoprolol or elequis?
If you have that problem, have you identified other causes and/or found effective treatments?
Thanks!

I take Metoprolol and yes I can often have that problem. I never thought about it being caused by any medication. X
I have had a problem caused by other meds but nothing much I can do about it,
I take Metoprolol and have a problem with mucous making certain foods difficult to swallow properly. Bits seem to get stuck on the surface of oesophagus at base of throat (where epiglottis is). Peanut butter is a particular problem. Have to repeatedly swallow and/or wash down with liquid.
I also suffer from GERD, which can be a cause of mucous - to help protect throat from reflux. I've assumed it is the cause - but combined with sleeping difficulties I might discuss alternative betablocker with cardiologist and see what happens to mucous as well as sleeping.
I take both metoprolol and Eliquis and I feel like my vocal cords are often coated with mucus. I thought this was caused by my allergies. I never made the connection to the medications. Thanks for posting the question.
Yes absolutely terrible, I was taking Elequis (brand name) Apixiban a blood thinner with Dronedarone for my AFib and after Covid I had terrible coughing, gagging and spitting up mucus/phlegm. GP did not know what to do with me when antibiotics did not work…no infection etc. I also had brain fog, felt tired. One night forgot to taken the second pills and awoke with a clear head, so I decided to stop the pills. Got better. Apixiban is now the anticoagulant choice of the NHS in UK. I believe not enough research has been done on these new blood thinners and side effects are not being collated. GPS do not know.
I'm on Verapamil and have a terrible problem with phlegm.I had a heavy cough and cold in October, started the verapamil in November and have had the thick phlegm ever since. I had a bacterial infection which was treated with antibiotics and cleared but the phlegm persists.
I hadn't connected it to the medication but maybe you're onto something, especially seeing all the other replies here.
I too would be interested. I do a lot of gargling. I take Apixaban 2.5 x 2 daily.
one can never rule out the possibility of meds creating allergic reactions.Though I believe from what I’ve learned in most cases, we often create more phlegm as we age due to allergies. GERD, pulmonary issues …
My mother in law always said “my old lady cough “ it sounded kinder when she said it in French!
As for swallowing- it can also be tied to the vagus nerve dysfunction- and since many of us have vagus mediated AF….
We are a courageous lot!
Bon courage ❤️🩹
I have it too and I take Metoprolol and Xarelto, but I blame it on my cat!
I have often wondered about that with Eliquis. Such a nuisance.
I think amiodarone caused my mucus. I stopped amiodarone 5 years ago, but the mucus continued until recently. Now is much better, but still have some. I have been on eliquis for about 4 years. Maybe I still have some now from eliqius.
I want to be clear that I am not claiming for a fact that Metoprolol and/or Eliquis are causing my throat mucus. The timing is suspicious, however, and I read somewhere online that it was a side effect of Metoprolol. I was unable to find that statement online again.
I appreciate the responses and wanted to see whether others had made a connection.
I had excess mucus caused by stomach protector famotidine, gone now I have stopped taking it
Eliquis, yes for sure. I only took Metoprolol for a year after my stent was inserted.
