Am I right in assuming I cannot take anti inflammatory medications for pain while taking Edoxaban. I suffer from osteoarthritis in a lot of joints. Now my hip has started. As an avid bowler with a competition soon I really need to work through the pain.
Any suggestions please.

I know this is true with Warfarin not sure about Edoxaban. Because of this restriction I take CoCodomol 30/500, prescription grade. I took it for pain from arthritic knee (now fixed by surgery) and still take it for arthritic shoulder and neck.
I was told that I could no longer take Ibuprofen or NSAIDs when I was diagnosed with AF. I was prescribed Solpadol by my GP (same thing as CoCodamol) 50mg Codeine/500mg Paracetamol. Taking Ibruprofen for my Arthritis may have caused my AF. There are other stronger pain killers available through your GP so it is best to ask advice from your GP.
I have osteoarthritis in my right hip and knee , my DR. recommended Glucosamine with Chondroitin and MSM . I havent had a flare up for some years now but it has to be 1500mg Glucosamine / MSM with a minimum 1200mg Chondroitin.
Found your response to kkkats very interesting. I assume (as you are appearing on the AF Assoc forum of HU) that you have some form of AF. Thankfully I don't have OA in my hip, and my knee has been fixed with partial knee replacement, my problem is with neck and right shoulder.
So my interest is - is the Glucosiamine/MSM (1500mg) with added at least 120mg Chondroitin to ease the path of the OA and give relief or is it for pure and direct and specific pain control ? Also, if you are in Britain under the NHS is this stuff available as a NHS prescription.
While I am happy with my CoCodomol 30/500 it is always nice not to rely on drugs.
Glucosamine , Chondroitin , MSM is sold as a supplement , helps lubricate the joints .
My wife who had a c5-c6 spinal fusion over 20 years ago was first to gain relief and as my old rugby injuries have become more painful than just irritating I started on it to.
It takes at least a week to notice the benefit but over time I have not even had any irritation. Not a pain killer as in specific pain control its more going to the root of the pain and stopping that friction that creates the aggravation.
Many thanks for your timely reply. OK, now it is beginning to come back. I used to live in Sydney and in 2000 a Chinese surgeon in Penrith (Sydney's outer west) Private Hospital (Dr. Tung Satonga, I think) operated on my right knee and removed my cartilage and at the time advised me that he found the onset of osteoarthritis and he cleaned that up to. He warned me it would worsen over time - hence the partial knee replacement in Nov 2015. He also advised me to go on glucosamine ... can't remember all the details now. For reasons which I also cannot recall I discontinued the Glucosamine.
Rather than keep on with drugs I'd prefer your approach and 'oil the joints which are in need of oiling' and see how we go. I have found a UK brand/product that has similar, almost identical ingredients to what you have discussed and am going to get the OK to use it when I see my GP later this morning. I am cautious about just buying it from a Health Store because I am on Warfarin and need to make sure it doesn't work against the benefits of Warfarin.
I had bone fragment and cartilage removed in Wagga NSW from my knee back in 2000 and the orthopedic surgeon said I would need a knee replacement within seven years . As I havent needed to pursue this course I can only put down to the effectiveness of the supplements. About a year ago I added extra Hyaluronic Acid , its in the one I take already but I added another 50mg.
My daily intake
Glucosamine 1500mg
MSM 3000mg total ( added 1500mg separate tablet )
Chondroitin 200mg
Hyaluronic Acid 3.3mg which is included in above +50mg separate capsule. 53.3mg
It is a grey area but I think its warfarin is the main concern and carneuny was going to seek his Drs opinion. In my case my Dr. had no hesitation recommending I take them as I take Rivaroxaban - but just about everything I take on the list has - Although these effects have not been confirmed in published medical literature or during clinical studies,
The same caution is given for taking statins and Omega 3 oils.
Its a bit of covering all legal possibilities for US to some degree IMO
I have read that those supplements effect anticoagulants so I haven’t taken them, how long have you been taking them I am assuming you are on a anticoagulant
I have been on Xarelto for ten years , I have taken Omega 3 for fifteen years and Glucosamine I began seven years ago but only went with the higher doses of MSM and Hyaluronic Acid for eighteen months , I was a bit indifferent seven years ago to the need but as the aggravation became more common I included it in my daily supplements.
As for thinning and bruising - this is nothing I have ever experienced and the fact that atorvastatin has the same warning as Omega 3 oils when taken with xarelto made me think its because some people do bleed and bruise just with xarelto and in their case its very unwise to take further blood thinners ( for want of a better word )
I was on Fluorouracil, 5-FU for 8 weeks and didnt have any bleeding problems and its on the list of major drug interactions.
Mainly I trust my Doctor is correct and if I did have a contradiction I would cease immediately .
Hi I have been reading your reply again and am wondering have you ever tried turmeric powder as I’m on apixaban anticoagulant and was told at the clinic that I shouldn’t use omega of Msm as it thins the blood but in the past I use to use turmeric powder for pain relief but stopped taking it as it is also classed as a blood thinner, but my pain has got so bad that I’d like to try turmeric again. Also how much of the omega and Msm do you take daily I do not bruise or upto now had any bleeding problems and I’ve now taken apixaban for 3 years thanks for any reply
No I havent tried tumeric as I get enough relief to not need anything extra besides what I take already. This is particular to me so its not a recommendation , but as I have stopped atorvastatin I use Omega oils for good cholesterol and Glucosamine + MSM + Chondroiton and Hyaluronic acid for joint ease.
Fish Oil 1500mg x 2 twice a day ( 6000mg )
MSM 3000mg a day
All the " maybe "blood thinners on the Rivaroxaban contrary list that I take are in the minor category ( may or can ,not will react )
I have been prescribed some major risk ones on the list and had zero reaction - but these were prescription drugs. After 10 years I can be reasonably sure about which supplements are safe and which ones are risky - Nattokinase is in this area.
Take your pick on Omega 3 - I have diabetes 2
1/.Fish oil supplements could help reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes, new research suggests.
2/. Some research shows that supplementing with high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids could increase blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.
My blood sugar levels decreased from 8.4 down to 5.9 .......
Glucosamine and condroitin certainly help. I took them for 16 years for osteoarthritis in my spine and sciatica. However I was advided to stop them when I was put on to Edoxaban. I likewise had to give up Turmeric and fish oil and of course Naproxen a d Ibuprofen and Aspirin, I take codeine phosphate 30 mg Paracetamol and Gabapentin. I am having a bad flare up due to the excitemnt of gatdening these last few sunshiney days. I shall have to get advice from GP but it does seem anticoagulants and pain relief don't mix well.
You must never take Ibuproven or other NSAIDs while your on anticoagulants, in fact I would ban Ibuprofen it I could as the link has been proven that it causes AFib, which I believe happened in my case as I was also prescribed this for osteoarthritis in my hips and back. I have to take tramadol and paracetamol to get any relief from pain.
I have AF and a PM - and have been on Diclofenac (with specialist and GP approval) for some years to control (brilliantly) inflammation - particularly in joints. Following a TIA I was put on Edoxaban instead of Aspirin and switched to co-codamol and was quickly in massive pain. GP put me on Meloxicam and it works quite well (not as well as Diclofenac) but I have side effects (itchy rash on face) so I am off to the GP to try another NSAID.
Short answer - clearly NSAIDS can be troublesome to people with sensitive stomachs and trigger bleeds but used carefully it seems they can be used. Re Diclofenac - I am the only family member that used it, as all others that had had it, complained about stomach pains...
